I'm staunchly in the pro-extended nursing camp but truthfully at 2 weeks shy of 2 years old I really didn't think I'd be still nursing DS and I need to adjust my paradigm! At a year he started weaning feedings until he was down to short first thing AM and bedtime nursings by 18 months. I thought that he'd most likely completely wean BY 2 because of his natural progression. But if anything his interest is higher now than 6 months ago. And he's been biting for a reaction now which he didn't do before. If he sees me in any state of undress he calls out milk, milk! (sounds like mmm-(click) ) and wants to nurse for a minute. For the first time in 9 months he asked to nurse at DC during the day today. Even though I've been touting the party line of child-led weaning and how I was nursed until 2.5 I truthfully am not sure about nursing still going so strong at this point. I think a lot of it might have to do with him not really being a "baby" anymore. He transfered to a BBB a month ago and is pretty well potty learned - knock on wood. The increased interest in nursing probably stems from those big changes but I need to come to grips with my feelings. Any extended nursers know what I'm talking about?

Re: Never thought I'd be here; re extending nursing
I think how you feel is completely normal. I was also in the "let her self-wean" camp and I changed my tune after DD started increasing the amount of times she nursed from 3x/day (morning, pre-nap and nighttime) to wanting to nurse whenever she was bored, tired, cranky, teething, etc. I finally weaned her at 25 months and it was a really tough process for both of us. I don't regret having weaned her, but I think if she was still happy to only nurse a couple of times/day, I may have kept going until she decided to stop.
i'm in the same boat, at 18 mos we've recently gone thru some spurts of greater nursing during the day, which is the opposite of what i was hoping would be happening!! ever since about 10 mos she has only nursed in AM/PM and before naps. that is still mostly what she does, so i cant complain too much, but we have multiple overnight feedings too (i'd gladly nurse more during the day if it meant less overnights, but it doesnt make a difference). i used to think nursing past 2 was my limit (well first 1 was my limit, already shifted from there...) but now i have no idea how i will ever wean her so i'm sure we'll still be going...
