Postpartum Depression

PPD and returning to work???

I have a doctors appointment tomorrow and i plan on teling him about all my feelings and what I am going through after baby was born. It will be my first appointment with Dr. since delivery. Although I have healed from giving birth, I still don't feel mentally or physically ready to return to work. I feel like I should work out what's going inside my head first, control my mood swings and anger... I still feel like I havent enjoyed my baby due to what I am going through. How can I be a good happy mom if I feel like this... Is there a program that I will be put through to help my PPD? Medication? Is returning to work not a good idea right now? I have the flexability to take as much time off as I need to become healthy... thanks for any help.. thanks

Re: PPD and returning to work???

  • everybody is different.

for me, going back to work helped with my PPD because i didn't enjoy being with my son.  obviously it didn't solve my PPD problem, but it gave me a break from him that i desperately needed.

the "program" depends on the dr, but usually they start you out on an antidepressant.  it can take a week or two to for it to work, and sometimes the dosage or drug type needs to be changed to meet your needs...it's very frustrating if the first one you get doesn't work the way you want it to because of the time issues.

i needed more than just a med, i went to a support group - which was awesome- and saw a talk therapist.  surrounding yourself with understanding and supportive people, whether they're family/friends or paid professionals, is the best thing you can do for yourself.

if you have the flexibility to take as much time as you need then get a plan together with your doctor and go back when you start feeling better.  hang in there, it will get better.

  • Treatment will depend on diagnosis. I felt better once back at work (I work part-time), but didn't go back until DD was almost six months.

I would try and take at least 12 weeks off. Hopefully you'll be sleeping better and at least less hormonal by then.

Hang in there! It may feel like it takes forever, but you WILL feel better, I promise.
