Private or Shared L&D rooms at hospital on base?

I know it can probably vary by Base....but what was your room? Shared or Private?

Re: Private or Shared L&D rooms at hospital on base?

  • It was one vagina per delivery room but recovery rooms were shared.  I really disliked having to share a toilet with a woman that was also bleeding her guts out from having a child.  It seemed extremely unsanitary.

  • From what I was told at our tour, it's one person per L&D room. But when you are moved to the Mother Baby Unit for the 24 hours or so that you stay, it may be up to two other women. They said they do they're best to keep you by yourself but Madigan Army Hospital is ranked #2 in births (i assume for military hospitals) so they can't guarantee it. Although I believe if you end up having a c-section you are by yourself.
  • i did the L&D tour, and it was one person per room.  it was a decent size too.

  • L&D was private.  I assumed that recovery rooms would be as well, but that isn't necessarily the case.  Luckily, it wasn't busy when I had DD, so I didn't have to share with anyone.  I could barely stand being in a private room for 36 hours and that was being discharged early.

  • At the NNMC it's private. All of it.

    All private at WBAMC.
  • We are stationed OCONUS in Okinawa Japan- so there is only 1 hospital for all military members to use.  I do get my own L&D room but post pardum and recovery is set up to share.  It doesn't mean it will always happen- but if a lot of people are all in recovery together then we will be sharing.  Many of my friends have already given birth and non of them yet have had to share so I"m hoping I will end up with my own room regardless.

  • DS1 was 1 person per L&D room and I got a private mother/baby room and DH could stay with me.  DS2 was an emergency c/s so obviously just me in there delivering.  DS2 recovery room was a private room and DH was able to stay with us also.  This was 2 different MTFs.

  • All private at RAF Lakenheath in the UK.
  • I was at Fort Hood.  Delivery rooms were all private.  There were both shared and private recovery rooms.  I got the biggest private room they had thanks to having twins and the recovery from hell.  I think they would have felt bad for anyone having to share a room with me.  ;)
  • MCB Camp Pendleton has separate delivery and recovery rooms. Both private.

  • at madigan L&D rooms are private... but all my friends ended up having to share recovery rooms, and husbands can't stay overnight, and those are just 2 things i am not a fan of... so i got standard. sucks because i can see madigan from my house and it would be super convenient, but convenience didnt win out over what i wanted in other ways.

oh and one of my friends is prior army. i forget where she was stationed somewhere in TX i think but when she had her first baby she was in a L&D room with other women. like other soldiers. they didnt do that to the wives but female soldiers they were like eh, you can watch eachother crown. lol.

  • At Naval Hospital Bremerton the rooms are private Labor/Delivery/Recovery Suites.  You check in, they put you in a room and that is the room you labor in, deliver in (unless you have a c-section, then they wheel you down the hall to the OR and back to the same room), recover in and stay in until you leave the hospital.  The rooms are private and have recliners and couches, husbands or support persons are encouraged to stay.  The rooms are also equipped with warmers and all of things necessary for all standard baby tests and procedures (except circumcisions which are done down the hall) and babies room in.

Naval Hospital Bremerton has a much nicer L&D situation than any civilian hospital I have ever visited (when friends and family have delivered in them).

This, except I didn't have to share my recovery room.  When I delivered, only three other moms were there, so we each had rooms to ourselves.  If there had been more deliveries, I would have had to share.

  • I had a private birthing suites and then a private recovery room.  The recovery room could be doubled up IF they needed extra beds, but that it is unlikely.  At least at our base.
  • all private I believe.

My ds was taken to another hospital to a nicu and i didn't see him for 3 days. I almost lost it just hearing other babies crying on my floor. I would have killed someone if they would have put me in a room with another mom and newborn.

I'm hoping wilford hall is private too. anyone know?

Yes, WHMC has private recovery rooms and a chair/bed for dad to sleep if need be.  The one thing about Wilford Hall L and D is that they are extremely short on pillows.  I'm thinking they are not ordering anymore due to the moving of L and D over to BAMC.  You only get one per room so you need to bring a couple extra for yourself or if dad spends the night.

  • I've been told that L&D at NMCP is private but mother-baby rooms can be shared with one other family. There is a chance you can be by yourself but they have on average 350 births a month so I am guessing that it's a small chance of having a room to yourself. No
  • Wilford Hall is Private for delivery and post partum.
  • All private at NNMC (where I had DS).

Here at Fort Campbell (BACH) the L&D rooms are all private but the postpartum rooms are for 2 families.
