2nd Trimester

How many oz of water did you have to drink before your u/s?

I am going for my 20w u/s today and, having several coworkers with babies under 1, we got to talking... the amount of water we were required to drink before the u/s varied a lot!

One was told 48oz., another 16oz, another 20oz... I was told 32oz (but know I won't be able to hold more than 20... I'm almost certain of that!).

I know some people are not told to drink any at all.

 Just curious!

Re: How many oz of water did you have to drink before your u/s?

  • None unless I was thirsty.  After 16 weeks,  I didn't have to have a full bladder for the u/s.

  • I was told to drink 20oz.

But my best friend just had hers and didn't drink the whole 20oz. , but she also had a big breakfast. Her tech told her that was fine usually you don't have to drink all the water they tell you.

    Good Luck!

  • I was told 20oz
  • I had to drink 32oz and hold for an hour before
  • I was told 16oz, but probably drank about 12oz. No issues with my u/s other than baby wouldn't turn over and show her spine.

  • I was told not to drink water or anything before my u/s (at 19 weeks. Had Level 2 at 21 weeks and was told the same - no drinks. Next one is around 34 weeks I believe.) They actually urged me to empty my bladder before the u/s. I'm glad I did, too bc we were in there for over an hour.

  • I was just told to have a full bladder.  It's always full these days so I just drank a small bottle of water on the way to my appt.

  • The perinatologist has me drink 16 oz the hour leading up.  Of course, they always end up doing a transvaginal half way through and I have to empty my bladder...

Drinking lots of water the days leading up can help get a better view of baby and better pictures.

  • They told me to drink 32 oz but they also said to just drink until my bladder was full. So I drank about 20 oz and was fine. They also told me that having a full bladder made getting some of the shots easier, so after they were done with them I could empty my bladder.

This. I can hardly hold it for 20mins and they want an hour? psh...

  • I was told none.

  • None. In fact, I've never been told to drink water before any of my ultrasounds.
  • I wasn't told how much to drink, so when the office called to confirm the appointment I asked.  I was told that it didn't matter how much I had, but that my bladder didn't have to be full for the 20 week scan.
  • For my 12wk NT scan I was told to drink 20oz but when I got there the u/s tech had me empty my bladder and said it wasn't necessary to have drank (drunk?) that much.

  • I was told 32 oz, but had about 25 or so, and when I got there, they made me use the restroom because my bladder was too full. I think it all depends on the tech.
  • No water here... I was actually asked to go to the bathroom prior to the u/s.

0oz. I had to give my pee sample before going in to get an u/s anyways as part of my regular appointment. I've never had to have a full bladder for any of my ultrasounds.

  • I didn't have to drink any before mine (at 19 weeks). In the middle of the U/S the tech had me get up and walk around and empty my bladder to try and get my LO to move to a better position for the measurements.

  • None, thank goodness!!
  • You should call where your u/s is scheduled and ask them.  For my 20 week anatomy scan, I was mailed instructions to drink 32oz of water an hour prior to my appt.  For my NT scan which was at the same place, I was not instructed to drink any water and when I asked at the check in desk if I had to have a full bladder for the NT scan, she said if I wasn't told that I needed to, then no.

  • DRINK! They couldn't get a good 3d u/s cause she had me go pee and all my liquids were drained. I chugged about 50 oz of water before that dang thing! NOT ONE 3D PIX!!
  • Just have a full bladder. I drink 2-3 cups (16-24 oz) 45 minutes before my appt.

I've found this makes my bladder full but not so much that it explodes.

ive never been told to drink water before an u/s during pregnancy. the only time i was told that was several years ago when i had an u/s done to look at my ute and ovaries to find out why i was bleeding heavily for a month. back then, it was 32 oz.
  • None? Was never told to drink water for either u/s w/ either pregnancy.

This.  My u/s tech said it made no difference.  If they can't visualize abdominally (pretty unlikely at 20 wks), they just do the transvaginal view.

2 years TTC with 5 losses, 1 year recovering, 6 months applying for adoption approval, and almost a year waiting for a placement. Then, a miracle BFP at age 36!

  • I asked the tech why the full bladder, and she said one of the reasons why is because they measure your cervix, and it's easier to see/measure when your bladder is full.

  • I was told to drink 48 oz... I think I managed 30 and the entire time I had to go to the bathroom. The tech said my full bladder was actually getting in the way!
  • I wasn't told to drink any specific amount before the scan and I was actually  told to empty my bladder right before it.

  • Zero!! Finally no full  bladder! I think I drank about a cup in the car on the way there anyway, but it wasn't necessary. Baby is big enough for them to see without the full bladder.
