1st Trimester

Baby almost 2 weeks behind?

I had a transvaginal ultrasound yesterday, and now I'm very worried.  According to my LMP, I should be at 6w6d; however, when I went in for my u/s, my gestational sac only measured at 5w2d.  I guess it's possible that I ovulated very late, but that would have meant that we conceived on June 21st and I got a positive pregnancy test only 8 days later (on June 29).  Any experience with this?  I am thinking this is not great news... any HONEST advice?

Thank you!

Re: Baby almost 2 weeks behind?

  • You could have very well ovulated late - honestly your LMP means zip when it comes to figuring your EDD.  Unless you're charting/temping/monitoring you really don't know when you O.

It takes about 7 days for the egg to implant which means it's very possible that you had enough hCG in your system to get a BFP at 8DPO.  Was the line faint?

I wouldn't worry yet - this could mean you're just not as far along as you though, it doesn't mean you're out of the game.

  • They told me the same thing that i looked to be a week behind, the dr. said either i ovulated later or they just werent getting a good enough view on the u/s to accurately date it. Dont worry yourself because it may be for nothing.
  • I agree with pp.  You probably ovulated late, which would give you a different EDD than your LMP did.  Such as I only know that my EDD is correct because we did an IUI, so I know exactly when I ovulated.

  • Yes, the line was very faint... when I look back at it now, it's obvious, but when it's still wet, it's harder to see.  In fact, I had to wake my husband up to make sure I was reading it correctly.  Ever since then, it has been getting darker (I have been taking tests every 4 days or so).  I will definitely feel better after my appointment next week, but waiting is the hardest thing.  I guess I will be happy or sad after next week, but knowing is what's important.
  • I O'd June 20 and got a + HPT (very faint though) June 30th. Today I measured 5 weeks 2 days.

  • A faint line means you probably had JUST enough hCG to trigger a BFP.  For now, believe you just ovulated late and everything is fine.  :)  Keep us updated.
  • I had pretty much the exact same situation so I wouldn't worry. According to my LMP I should be at 11 weeks today. But my last U/S has me at 9w6d today...so that would put me ovulating around May 20 and I tested only 10 days later with a BFP on May 30. So I wouldn't worry too much about that. I worried myself to death thinking I had probably miscarried because he couldn't pick up the heartbeat and 2 weeks later we got great news and a strong heartbeat! So keep your head up!
  • I sure hope so.... yesterday was my first day of nausea and nothing sounds good (of course, that didn't keep me from eating 2 brownies! Stick out tongue)... So I'm starting to think that I'm more on track with week 5 symptoms... but my boobs have hurt for at least 2 weeks and I started having cramping about 5 days after conception... we shall see.  it's so hard because everyone is different.. but the information you read applies to about 70% of the population... leaving about 30% of us freaked out!
  • No experience but you may very well have O'd late.  I'll keep you in my T&Ps.

  • With a line that faint, I bet you just O'd late.  I got my + at 9 DPO, and it was like you described.
  • Thanks everyone--I guess I never considered the fact that the line was so faint... If I had ovulated regularly (I thought we had conceived on June 9th), then the line would have probably been darker when I tested on June 29th!  Makes sense now... sometimes you don't think of these things when your mind is racing a mile a minute.
  • If you don't chart, then you don't know when you O'd anyways.  FWIW, I got my bfp at 8dpo with this pregnancy and 9dpo with my last (DS).

  • I had actually started charting this past month, but we didn't expect to conceive this quickly... I normally go 2 months very regular, then a month where I start a week later than expected... I have a feeling this past month was that "long" month.... I am so excited, though.... Cautiously excited :)
  • I got my very faint BFP only 8 dpo.  I used OPKs last month and that's the only way I know.  If I wouldn't have used those, I would've thought I ovulated way later than I did.  My lines got darker and darker too.  Now, I haven't have my first US yet, but it sounds to me like everything is fine and normal!  You probably just did ovulate later than you thought.

  • I O'd late with my first. I was a full 10 days off. At the time I wasn't charting so I had no idea that I had actually gotten my BFP about 8 or 9 dpo.

Then with my 2nd, I was actually charting and got a BFP 8 dpo.

  • I ovulated 2 weeks late and everything is going great now that we figured that out!
  • I O'd pretty late and only knew because I was charting. According to LMP I was supposed to be 8.5 weeks but the baby measured 7.5 just as I knew it would. Try not to worry.

  • Sound like me, My nurse kept saying you should be over 6 weeks and I kept telling her NO I do not have a normal cycle (42 days is mine) but she wouldn't listen so she sent me to get an ultrasound and like I thought my baby is not as far a long as everyone assumed. The cupcake is only 5 weeks because I ovulated on June 20th (on my 28th day of my cycle) and I took my prego tests on July 1st and 2nd. I actually took one on June 25th (I think) and it said Negative but I tested again anyway. I was suppose to start my period on July 3rd. I went in today and the baby is fine, there is a yolk sac no heartbeat yet but I go in again in 2 weeks. So my baby is just fine :)

    Hope this helps

  • I found out yesterday that our LO is measuring a week behind according to my LMP. I knew that I did not conceive on the date that I should have ovulated according to my LMP, but I ended up conceiving even a few days later then I thought, I got my positive test 9 DPO. I conceived my first cycle on birth control and my Dr. said that my LMP was a ?pill period? and as a result I probably ovulated late as a result of coming off birth control.

Seriously?  Stop peeing on things!  It's expensive and pointless.  You're pregnant, and continuing to take pee-tests won't give you any additional information.

  • When we went in for the u/s and realized he/she was only at 5w2d, we didn't see a yolk sac or fetus.... just a gestational sac... is that normal?  I've heard it is, but I was surprised when someone said they saw a yolk sac.

Actually, they do tell you something.  if you take the same test over a 2 week period, and the line gets darker, then you have more HCG in your system... everyone knows that.  If you're taking a test that says "pregnant/not pregnant" then you're correct; however, that's not the test I'm taking.... thanks for your non-helpful feedback, though.

  • My baby is measuring 9 days behind according to my LMP but I am sure I ovulated late, as I did the last pregnancy.  My vaginal u/s dated the baby 6w5d but my doctor said that the dating isn't accurate under 7 weeks and I am going back tomorrow.  I did see the heartbeat and little leg buds so I feel fine about it.  Good luck!
  • Did you have a blood test to check your progesterone?  This baby measured 10 days behind (according to my chart) at my first u/s and my blood test showed that my progesterone was pretty low.  I started on supplements and by my next u/s, about 6 weeks later, he had completely caught up.

    Good luck!!

Not necessarily.  The amount of dye in tests can vary (even within the same brand and package).  There are some ladies who still only get light lines throughout for weeks and weeks.  I'm sure you can find some of them on this board.

I'm sorry, I have to disagree. I was able to predict my three early losses this way. The line got darker, stopped darkening, and then got fainter. Falling betas confirmed, all three times. There is some variation in the dye, but generally speaking, if the line starts to fade in the first couple of weeks, that is an indicator there is less HCG in your system.

OP - in all honesty, it could be a matter of late implantation or ovulation, or there could be something wrong with the pregnancy. At this point, the only thing you can do is wait, and I know how hard that is. It is pure torture, and I am so sorry you are dealing with this.

You are in my thoughts, and I hope this is just a momentary scare in an otherwise uneventful pregnancy.
