...Jacob has herpes!
He has a rash on the left side of his forehead that I thought was excema or something like that, so I had been treating it with 1/2% hydrocortizone. Yesterday it wasn't getting any better (after appearing over the weekend), so I took Jacob to the pedi. (He doesn't seem bothered by it; doesn't touch it; doesn't scratch at it.)
After having 2 pedis in our practice look at it, they determined that it was herpes simplex 1 - the same virus as cold sores. (Herpes simplex 2 is the genital kind, which he DOES NOT have.)
Since its on his forehead and rather close to his eye, they rushed us to a pediatric opthamologist to ensure that virus hadn't made its way into his eye. Luckily, it has not as that would have been very serious. I was terrified on the drive over to the other doc - thinking the worst!
So, we have no idea where he got it. DH gets cold sores here and there, but not recently. The doc said that it usually flares up when he's stressed or fighting off other illnesses. He's not sick right now, but maybe its coming. This could be a recurring thing throughout his life, or a one time occurrence. Only time will tell.
We are sequestered (self-imposed) in the house until the rash goes away. The doc said that he was probably fine to be around other children, but I would be so pissed if a mom brought her kid to Gymboree or something with an active herpes outbreak!
Never a dull moment as Jacob's mother!
Re: You are never going to believe this...
Hi! I don't post here very much (still pg, hope to join soon I was browsing on my way to pg after if and your title caught my eye). I am so sorry to hear your LO is sick, I can't imagine how painful that must be.
Just one thing that might help you talk to doctors about it in the future though. Maybe your doctor misspoke, or you misheard, but HSV-1 is the sampe herpes virus that causes cold sores, not chicken pox. Chicken pox is varicella zoster (also a herpes virus, but a completely different kind). It may confuse doctors when you give them his medical history in the future (and he is not immune to chicken pox as a result of this infection)
If it is HSV-1 he could have picked it up from a relative or friend with a begginning (might not have even known it) or healing cold sore kissing him vigorously.
I hope he feels better soon, he is quite the cutie!
Ugh! A mommy's life, huh?
Hope he's better soon
You're kidding? Wow! I hope this is the end of it for him!
Cal has a strange rash (bug bites?) right now...did you see my post on Monday? If not, would you look at see if the rash is anything like Jacob's? Certainly never thought Herpes could be the cause!

I guess if the rash doesn't go away in a day or so, you might want to take him to the pedi. Hopefully its just a mosquito bite that he reacted badly too. Sweet meat!
Okay - thanks for checking!

Aww poor guy!!
I was looking for a BFP.... drama queen
Oh no!!!! I have seen case studies where children get it around the eyes because people kiss them on the forehead and it spreads! Hopefully it will go away soon.

Hey! I have had HSV1 my WHOLE life. It CAN spread to genetials if an outbreak comes in contact.....
I get them when stressed, sick, or have been out in the sun too long. Sunburn will almost ALWAYS bring them on, so keep him covered!
I can get them on my mouth, chin, even nose and cheeks. DH also caught it from me, and his first outbreak was HORRIBLE, like down his throat, ect. They are super contagious if you have the virus so keep an eye on them!
My mom has herpes on her leg, and she has no idea how it got there. I'm not sure how it happens like that. Hers comes out when she exposes her leg to sun. Hopefully Jacob's won't recur.
