stopping pumping at work

the last month or two my pumping output at work has dropped and nothing i do has brought it back up. im getting like an oz from each side every time i pump.

i have been supplementing with formula while im at work (and sometimes at home because i nurse ds and ocassionally he will still be hungry and gets frustrated and cries).

i really wanted to keep pumping till he was a year old, we are one month away and i just dont think i can keep pumping.

why do i feel so incredibly guilty that i cant make it to the year?

  • You made it to 11 months!! YEAH for you!!

Seriously, that amount of BM is far more than the average child. Every oz is a gift. Please know that you have given your LO the best start they can get. A few weeks shy of a year is an amazing accomplishment! Good for you!!

Oh, and please feed your child formula. If he seems hungry at the end of a feeding, formula is great. Don't feel like you need to give your child BM or nothing. If that happened (nothing), you should feel guilty! :)

  • I don't know why you feel guilty.....b/c 11 months is AWESOME. I am only making it to 6, and I'm so proud and feel so good that I was able to give him that long. 11 months is amazing.

thank you for the support. i guess i just need to hear that coming from someone besides my mom (who was never supportive of breastfeeding)

and i have no problems giving him formula, it took us a while to find one that didnt make him break out in a rash cause he had really bad allergies but i think what we are using now is working out nicely.

You did and are doing great! Don't stress about it. I stopped pumping at work at six months but continued to bf at home. Used formula at daycare instead of pumped milk at that time. My DS is very very healthy. Great immune system, great size, and super bright. Don't feel guilty!
  • Do not feel guilty! You've done an awesome job!!!!

At this point you can probably finish up what formula you have and go to cow's milk unless he had some type of milk protein intolerance. If you want to continue nursing at home, that is great too- I've done that forever it seems, but stopped pumping at 11 months.

I had to wean sooner than I wanted to (surprise pg).  I made it to 10+ months.  I hated giving it up, but once I did, things seemed much easier.  No more pumping, DH could help more at night, DD even started sleeping a little better since I didn't have to pick her up when she woke up at night, etc.

I also felt less "bad" about it since DD was doing great on table foods and was starting to have less bottles too.  Since her nutrition wasn't predominantly me, I felt better than I would have weaning her a lot earlier.

     Anyway 11m is awesome.
