Did I do the wrong thing?

I just had interviews for an internal position, which I think went fairly well.  During the interview, one of the managers questioned my employment dates on one of my jobs saying, "I was just curious here, because it looks like you had two jobs at the same time?"  I was puzzled because I thought it was clear on my resume that there was no overlapping or gaps, but I said "No, I only worked there for 9 months, then returned to my old company." So she understood, and that was the end of it.

When I came home, I looked at the resume I gave them to see where the confusion may have come from and...ugh....I found I made a mistake on my dates and had Dec 2001 instead of Dec 1999.

This morning, this same manager sent me a reply to my 'thank you' email, saying she enjoyed meeting me as well and will be in touch this week.  I replied back, including an updated resume and admitted to the typo.  Now I'm thinking, did I just blow it for doing that?  Rarely does an employer reply to a 'thank you' unless they have some strong interest, and now I just basically showed her my carelessness with regard to my resume.

I'm probably thinking about this too much, but I really need this job.  What do you think?

I think if they're interested, it would not be a huge deal. I mean, maybe if the job was for a proofreader or something, but I doubt that's the case. Wink Good luck!

  • I actually find it odd that for an internal position, she's looking at your resume that closely!  It's a job from 10 years ago...??

  • I would say that this wouldn't be a deal breaker. Especially since she noticed the discrepancy herself. It was better to admit to the typo.

I think this is true - you admitted your fault and she had seen it already.  I think your proactive reply admitting your mistake shows you can own up to a mistake if necessary - we aren't perfect!  Good luck!

  • I think you are over-thinking it, and this will in no way influence whether or not you get the job.

I don't think they'll think you were careless about your resume. It was just a typo. Unless the job you are applying for is one where you format resumes for a living, it will have no bearing. Your interview, experience, skills, and first impression will play a much greater role in the final decision.

  • I think you handled it just fine.  Giving them the updated resume ensures they have an accurate one on file.  I don't think it should hurt your chances any.
