Do you GIVE one or two birthday gifts?

My twins are 4 and we're smack in the middle of birthday season, apparently. I'm having a hard time deciding if I (they) should be giving one gift or two at birthdays.  They like to pick things out for friends, but then again, giving one gift means I spend a little more and get something nicer.  Just wondering what other MOMs do.

Re: Do you GIVE one or two birthday gifts?

  • I give one. Unless I can find something really cute and little that I can get three of. I don't think anyone really expects me to give three gifts, since the presents are from the family, not from the kid. At least that's how I see it.

(Can you imagine how many gifts I'd have to get for my friend with quads?)

I see your point but then I feel guilty that other families have to buy two gifts for us and then we buy one for them.  I feel like I am supposed to make up the difference by spending more on their one child so it evens out.   Or maybe others don't think of it that way?

  • Hmm...for cousins we give one gift from the boys.  If a friend invites them to a party both boys give a gift.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. Life isn't fair, I guess. Stick out tongue

  • Hmm, if mine were older I would give 2 smaller gifts that they can pick out or if they agreed on one more expensive thing, give that. When they are older, they will def want to pick their own out. That is how me and my twin sister were :)

  • I hadn't thought of this yet!  I'm thinking each of our girls should give their friends a gift.  The hostess of the party sees them as 2 kids and will be providing food/drink/favors for 2 kids, so I think we should give 2 gifts.  (Plus, I think each of the girls will want that special feeling of carrying a gift in to the party.) : )

Peakay - That would definitely be crazy if each of your boys gave a gift to each of the quads!!  I think that is an exception ; )

  • My daycare does birthday parties for the kids so this is my only experience.  We usually pick out a toy from each of the girls for the birthday kid.  I don't lump them together b/c they'll each eventually be getting their own toy from the other kids if that makes sense.
  • I give one gift- a little more expensive than when i just had griffin alone.  I don't think anyone expects you to spend per gift the cost per head when you are talking about a kid's bday party. If they do- then i don't want to be friends with them.
  • I can say that I think one gift is totally acceptable.  I have had one kid forever and we've invited 1-3 kids in a family and he's always gotten one gift no matter how many kids are in the grouping.  I think that's fine.  Plus we give a gift to each kid in the family on their birthday and I never think of it as unfair.  Now we will have 3 kids so I guess it is coming back ;)

Hmm. I think of the spending more as per recipient. So if they had two kids, I wouldn't spend half as much on each kid as for an only child from another family. I might do things differently once the boys are older (e.g. if I let them help pick out the gift(s)).

I think of it as each child should get one gift per family.  If you give one gift per child's birthday (so, if your friend has two kids, you end up buying two gifts per year), and they give one gift for each of your children, then each child ends up getting one gift a year.  Make sense?

For example, I have a friend with three kids (not multiples).  When she comes to my oldest's birthday party, I would not expect her to bring three gifts just because I am providing food/favors for her three kids.  And for the twins' birthday, I certainly wouldn't expect her to bring SIX gifts.

  • I would do 2 less expensive gifts also. When it comes to my kids, most ppl  feel they have to give 2 gifts for things & I feel guilty about that (part of the reason I'm not having a big 1st bday party). Esp by age 4, they are feeding 2 kids & giving 2 party favors, etc so I feel like they should each give a gift like everyone else at the party.

The one more expensive gift idea is good too... I dont think I'd be bothered by another family not giving multiple to me and wouldn't expect it but I would personally do it.
