To buy a wipes warmer or not??

I've heard mixed messages regarding the wipes warmer. Some think they're the best thing ever and others consider them to be an unnecessary luxury item. I personally did register for one (Prince Lionheart that comes with the Everfresh system to ensure the wipes don't dry out or brown etc..) but would like to hear everyones' opinion of them.

waste of money, IMO. when some babies get used to warmed wipes they scream when you have to change them out and about and you only have cold ones.

Not. We don't use one and DD is fine.

I dont want to carry around warmed wipes in the diaper bag (I dont even know how), so why make DD go back and forth between room temp and warmed ones?

I didn't register for one. I've been a nanny for the past 3 years, and the babies never seemed to mind the wipes being room temperature.

I thought they were dumb. Then I had DS, and he used to scream during the middle of the night diaper changes like we were murdering him. So my mom brought us one from Target because she thought it would help... and the screaming never happened anymore. He never cared if the wipes were warm when we were out or during the day, but at nighttime he would just get irrate if you wiped him with a cold wipe. (He was an end of November baby, and our thermostat was set to the SIDs 67 degrees, so the wipes were pretty cold.)

I would have one on hand, and if LO doesn't mind cold wipes I would return it and buy some diapers. That way, if you do think you need it, you have it.

See, that is what everyone told me. But DS never cared if we were out and the wipes were cold. He just cared during the middle of the night, when he woke up because his diaper was wet. My friend's son is the same way. So I think it is like the nipple confusion everyone talks about but very few babies experience.

They make travel wipes warmers now to eliminate the "what if we're out and about and they scream.." lol.

This is not necessarily true. We've used a wipe warmer since DS has been born and he has no problem at daycare or when we go out. We bought it because when he was a baby I would've felt bad to shock him at night with a cold wipe. I don't know the brand that we have, but there are no pieces that ever have to be replaced. I think the Prince Lionhart one has a filter or something. This one is just the warmer. We've been using it for 27 months and plan on using the same one for DD. (Watch, now that I said that it's gonna end up breaking and I'm gonna have to get a new one for DD!!)

ETA: This is the warmer we have. We love it.

I've also never experienced this. The only times the first wipe would dry out was if I left the top open. They actually stay very moist in our warmer and it gives me a nicer container to hold them in instead of the actual Pampers container.

I remember lots of people posting them as a must have when I was in the 0-3 board. Guess it helps LO not wake when doing the midnight diaper change.

I thought they were dumb until my mom bought me one, and it worked great and helped with the changes/screaming (DD did not like cold wipes). I had the Prince Lionheart one and didn't have a problem with the wipes drying out at all. I don't plug it in anymore but still use it to hold the wipes- it works great!

As a microbiologist, I would not recommend the wipe warmers because they can grow bacteria and cause infection (unless you were diligent about cleaning it). On the other hand, I've heard it makes for a less crying baby since they don't get the shock of a cold wipe every time. Overall, I don't think it is for me.

I say NO WAY!! IMO a waste of money you can spend on diapers or formula! I decided I this was something I wouldn't buy. If I received one as a gift so be it. I did and tried it and I wished I would have taken it back. It came with a "replaceable" sponge thing and I followed the instructions to a "T". A week after plugged it in I noticed fuzzy stuff growing. It was mold. I work in the food service industry and know that bacteria grows in a nice warm environment. I unplugged it, cleaned it up and placed it in the yard sale pile in the garage. Besides, by the time I got the wipe out to use it it was cool anyway. DD has had no problem with room temp wipes. I do know people who can't live without one but we are managing just perfect!

I didn't use one and don't really think they are necessary. I also read a lot of negative reviews on them regarding mildew smells...that just grosses me out!

We didn't get one with our DD and she has been perfectly content with cold wipes.

Take this with a grain of salt because I don't have a wipe warmer, but friends who have had them often get rid of them because they dry the wipes out. I have also read that some of them can short and present a fire risk in the nursery.

I have noticed they are selling PORTABLE wipe warmers now... probably for the babies who get used to the nice warm wipes and need them when they are out and about to. Sounds like a pain to me!

If I was using disposable diapers/wipes I wouldn't get the wipes warmer but we're planning to use cloth dipes and wipes so the warmer will make things easier, that way I don't have to spray down a dry cloth or trudge to the bathroom to wet it at 2 in the morning.
