When is dada or mama a "real" first word?

Our LO has started saying Ba Ba and Da Da sounds the last week. She has only said what sound to be Ma Ma sounds when she's crying, but tonight when I was getting her ready for bed it was more clearly a mama directed at me. Is this her first word? She knows that Daddy is Da Da but hasn't called him that directly. Or is her first word yet to come? What do you think?

Re: When is dada or mama a "real" first word?

  • I think mama and dada are hard to know when they actually mean it as a word, b/c those are some of the first consonant sounds they make. I'm all for saying she said mama first though!

  • Jack says Dada and dog.  He looks directly at them, and says it.  Me? He says Bwab.  So....not sure that that counts yet

If I ask Wheres Dada? Or wheres dog?  He will swivel his head around until he finds them.

I think if she starts to consistently direct Mama at you, that she is saying it.

  • I did not count it as an actual word until DH walked in the door from work and F said Hi Dada. Prior, I considered it just more baby babble.
  • The progression goes like this:

    1. they babble it and get a reaction
    2. they name all kinds of stuff by it
    3. they name things that belong to mama, are mama, are a woman
    4. they name just mama or mama's stuff
    5. they name mama

    Pretty good explanation!

I consider it a real word when they use it appropriately. My daughter was almost 5 months old when she reached for me and cried MAMA! My son says Dada, Mama and NeNe (my mom) and reaches for us as he says it, so that tells us that he knows who we are and what to call us, so it's not just a sound he's making.

DD says these types of things all the time but I still don't consider it her first word.  To me, it won't be her first word until she is clear about what she is saying and directing it towards.
