Hawaii Babies

Can I ask a stupid ovulation ?

I know you ladies are here because you already have babies, but we are trying right now (been laying low about the subject though) and I'm just getting frustrated.

I usually have a 34 day cycle and today was supposed to be my ovulation day (according to my ovulation calendar app).  I am currently using ovulation strips, tested - and I'm not ovulating today.  I didn't miss the boat because I have been testing since Day 1 (today is Day 21) of my cycle just to get a feel for things since this is my first cycle actually using the strips.

Now I'm wondering, am I missing something , doing something wrong, is there something wrong, shouldn't I have ovulated already?  What really should I be doing to understanding the process? Is it stupid for me to be asking these questions?  It's been almost a year off the pill (granted, I haven't really been trying to track until the last couple months) and I'm now getting to the point where I'm getting stressed, worried and frustrated.

Any tips you can pass down to me would be wonderful :)  TIA!

Re: Can I ask a stupid ovulation ?

  • I definitely had a cycle or two where I didn't ovulate at all (I'm pretty sure, at least).  I was using OPKs for a few months, but honestly, it wasn't 'til I started charting that I was sure I ovulated, and exactly when.  That's when we conceived.  It's a pain in the butt, but it worked for me!  I also found that I didn't ovulate at exactly the same time every month...some months it was earlier/later than others.

  • Not a stupid question at all. I would chart if I were you too. Then you can know more certainly that you are ovulating. It may be this cycle will be longer. Have you been stressed (other than about this)? Even the stress of ttc could cause delayed ovulation, I think. My cycles were wonky and the cycle I conceived I didn't ovulate until day 44 or something. Are you checking you cm? I noticed ewcm and that's when I used the opk and got a positive. Of course, this was after I had already gone through like 2 boxes earlier in the cycle. Anyways, good luck! Hope you get a bfp soon!

  • Those ovulation calendars are based upon the assumption that you ovulate on CD14 (two weeks after your period)...most women DO NOT ovulate on CD14...it can be as early as CD10 or as late as CD30!  My BFP cycle was 38 days long and I O'd on CD26!  How did I know?  I was charting.  If you don't want to chart I recommend investing in Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor...you POAS and it does the rest for you.  Even if you do get a +OPK you won't know if you actually O'd unless you're temping since the shift in temp is the only way to know that your body actually released the egg.  Check out the free tutorials at www.fertilityfrined.com for more info!

  • I'm always under a bunch of stress and this certainly does not help things...I never realized how frustrating this could actually be Stick out tongue  There were a couple months where my cycle was 10 days longer than normal and than 7 days shorter, but normally I'm 34 days and I have been pretty spot on for a while now.

I have never charted or started temping so maybe that should be next step.  Thanks for the link Lori, I will certainly read up on it some more.   It just seems so overwhelming...why can't I just get an oopsie daisies ya know??  Everyone else around me has.

Ok...pitty party over.  Thanks for the tips ladies, I knew I would get great advice over here.

  • no such thing as a stupid Q! the link Lori gave you is great...that is where i started when we started actively TTC.  charting w/your temp is a great place to start...i never checked my CM 'actively' like some women do, i just took note of it whenever it was on the TP when i wiped....but the temping and CM changes soon made things easier to interpret.  the OPKs are helpful but you can sometimes miss the surge...you can also surge and not ovulate as well.  i think once you read through fertility friend and learn more about your cycle you'll be better prepared to actively TTC.  (just fyi - while rare, it is possible for your chart, OPKs, etc to make it look like you're ovulating when actually you aren't - that's what was happening in my case.)  my ob told me that if you are charting and really hitting your fertile window spot on, that you should be able to get PG within 6 cycles.  good luck, i know it can be so frustrating sometimes!! esp when AF shows up!
  • Lori and Jaime had some excellent advice - I can't think of anything to add! Just wanted to say to keep testing, since the "average" day that most women ovulate isn't accurate for a lot of women.

For example, I would O between 10-13 days after my period, NOT 14 days. I also only had a 12 day LP cycle (the period of time after you ovulate); it's common for those to be anywhere from 10-16 days. So, for example, if you generally have a 34 day cycle, but only a 11 day LP, you wouldn't ovulate until CD23 - 10 whole days after when the OPK box thinks you should ovulate!

I used OPKs, but checking my CM really helped me to get an idea of when O was approaching for me (like Jaime, I didn't "actively" check my CM, just looked at the toilet paper when I wiped). I also looooved Fertility Friend - it made charting and OPKs so easy to keep track of!

  • Thank you ladies for the explaination on this.  I never realized how frustrating and in depth this whole process could be.  I never thought I would actually have to go through this process.

I signed up for FF last night so I can keep track of things.  IF by October (my next OB visit) I don't get KU or I just can't get things on track, I will talk to my OB more.  But at least I can go into my appointment with some facts of what my body is doing.  FF really does have a wealth of information that I never knew existed

Thank you again ladies for your support, you all are just amazing and kind :)

  • I read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and also used FF.  I didn't have fertile CM the first few cycles, which made it difficult to time BD.  If you're ovulating, it's sometimes too late by the time you see your temp shift.  On our BFP cycle, I tried OPKs, but I also had EWCM for the first time.  It sounds like you've got a lot of advice to cover all your bases.  Good luck!
