Splinters?

DH let DS (3) run around on my parents deck sans shoes and he now has 6+ splinters in his feet.  Of course, we tried to remove the biggest last night & he kicked and screamed and I was afraid I would do more damage with the tweezers than good.  DH said we should just keep them clean & keep an eye on them & they'll come out on their own.  My folks always forced them out of us.  DH won out and we left them in & sent him to school today.  I've got a call into the pedi, but while I'm waiting, does anyone know what to do/have any advice on this?

Re: Splinters?

  • That sucks =( They will sometimes come out on their own and they will sometimes get infected. Sometimes they'll get infected after you get them out... You really can't win!! Clean is good enough for now so long as they're not causing any pain. Once they cause pain or get inflammed, they need to come out ! (duh)

My parents just held us down and dug them out...

  • Yep, this is pretty much what the pedi said.  They said we can also try a bath of epsolm (sp) salts to make the skin soft & even orajel/ambesol to numb the area, but it may not work.  He's kind of limping, but only when he thinks about it & I don't know if its pain or discomfort or just that he knows they are there.  Hopefully they come out quick or I'll have to decide whether we'll do the digging or whether it's worth it to scar him with a dr's visit :(
  • I remember hearing you can use glue to remove splinters - not sure if it will work, but I suppose it's worth a shot!
