For those of you who used PFs for newborns...

...did you have preemie-sized prefolds AND infant-sized prefolds? I have a mixed stash (fitteds, prefolds and a few AIOs) with 18 infant-sized prefolds in it... but some people have suggested getting preemie-sized prefolds because the infant-sized seemed too big initially.

I don't know if it matters, but we'll be using Tushies disposables for the first week, and DD was born at 8lbs, 2oz... so do you think infant-sized prefolds would be OK starting when the baby is 8 days old, or should I get some preemie-sized (and if so, how many)?

TIA!

  • out of curiousity, why sposies for a week? I am new to cd'ing and plan to do PF's for #2, so just wondering if this is a common practice and for what reason. Thanks! :)

    this :)

  • DS was born at 8 lbs 11 oz and the yellow edge prefolds were way big on him until the last couple of weeks; DD was 7 lbs 13 oz and did just fine in the same size from the start - just depends on build.  That being said, we could have made the prefolds work earlier with DS, but it was easier to just use fitteds (we rented KL0s) for us.  I would think preemie prefolds would be a waste of money unless you planned on using them later for doublers or burp cloths or whatever else.

No reason why besides that it was DH's request. With a new baby at home and trying to adjust to life as a family of 4, he asked if we could have a week using disposables before we begin the "learning curve" of using CDs. It's a pretty harmless request, so I'm happy to oblige.

  • We used both sizes. You can definitely fold down the rise on the bigger ones, but I didn't want to deal with that as I was learning to fold. PFs are cheap and easy to re-sell, so I decided it was worth it to get both sizes. I actually sold my nb stash for exactly what I paid for it, so I wasn't out anything for doing so.

  • For reference, my DD was 7 lbs 12 oz at birth and we started using CDs after about the first week.

I had the opportunity to take used premie prefolds from a neighbor before DD was born and I regretted passing them up because the infant ones were awkwardly large on her at first. But that was only for two weeks or so, so I wouldn?t have wanted to buy them, especially new. It didn?t take her long to grow into the infant prefolds, and we used primarily KL0s when she was itty-bitty anyway. If you were going to exclusively pf, it would be nice to have premie size, although still not necessary. So I wouldn?t worry about getting any, especially if you may have an 8-9 lb baby at birth. The infant pfs seemed to fit DD really well right around that size anyway.

Most people use up the newborn diapers they get from the hospital or as gifts up front, just to make life a little easier with a newborn. Some people also do it to either avoid getting meconium on the diapers (although I have heard mixed accounts on whether it actually stains or not) or to give space to the umbilical cord before it drops (b/c some diapers, like one-size, may not fold down). With prefolds, I wouldn't worry about either of those. Prefolds are easy to clean/sun and easy to fold down below the umbilical stump.

  • My daughter was 7lbs 6oz at birth and went down to 6lbs 8oz.  We just used the infant ones.  We used disposable for the first couple of days but when we switched to the PF's it was fine.  You could just fold them width wise instead of lengthwise if you want to make them shorter.
  • We used a diaper service for the first four weeks and they only had infant-sized prefolds.  We had to fold down, but it was fine.  Then we started using our stash (orange- and yellow-edge GMD pfs).  The orange-edge fit so much better than the diaper service infant ones, so I was glad we had them.

Short answer: You don't need the preemie ones.

  • We didn't have preemie size.  We started CDing on Day 4 of DD's life, she was not even 8 lbs at that time and infant size (green edge - now discontinued at GMD but still sold elsewhere) worked just fine.

BTW, we started CDing because of the ridiculously horrible sposie blowout we had at 3am.  So incredibly tired and overwhelmed and having trouble nursing and then a blowout that I swear hit every part of my body and my entire bedroom.  At 3am we switched to cloth and never looked back.  We too started with sposies because we thought it would be easier and found out we were terribly wrong.

The hospital will give you tons of sposies.  We had an entire pack still leftover when we switched over to cloth.

  • David most likely isn't even 6 pounds yet and I have already put the preemie prefolds aside. They are so teeny that he can pee through them in 20 minutes-they are soaked every time I go to change him! I am using infant prefolds on him now and just fold the rise down. Our daughter did last much longer in the preemie prefolds, so maybe he is just a super duper pee-er.

    I would skip them!

  • I'm not a fan of non-sized prefolds but I think you'll be fine. If baby needs smaller diapers you can always get them once he arrives. I ended up having to buy some preemie prefolds but I don't think that's the norm. I would try one of the prefolds on him right after he's born. If they seem like they're going to be too big you can order some preemies and have them delivered while you're still using the Tushies.
