Babies: 3 - 6 Months

bumbo users

would you say the bumbo has helped your LO learn to sit on his/her own.  My dr said no, but I would think it might, or atleast motivate her to want to sit up.  As soon as I put her down on her back she flips right over to her belly and is happy there for a good long while, so I'm also thinking maybe she'll strengthen her core more by pushing herself up and looking around while on her belly.  What do you think?  Should I get the bumbo?

Re: bumbo users

  • We like our Bumbo a lot.  Livy loves to sit in it and look around, laugh at us and check things out.  She sits strait up in it all by herself and she's a tiny little thing.  I think the way the chair sits really helps her.  And I like that I can set it on the ground and it is safe!

  • Liam's head and neck were a little wobbly and I felt like he was behind other babies in the strength area, so we got the bumbo and just for a few minutes a day we would put him in while helping him with our hands and it has helped tremendously.  Now if he is propped up on pillows he tries to pull himself to a sitting position by himself.  He also now doesn't need our help sitting in the bumbo.  We love it and I think it has helped but then again he is getting older and this could have happened without it.
  • We don't use ours a ton, yet, but I do think that it helps them to balance themselves.  They have to use a lot of their core muscles in order to do that.

One other thing we do is "baby sit-ups" with DS.  When he is laying on his back we grab his hands in both of ours and pull him up into a sitting position and make him balance there (while we are still holding his hands) and then slowly lower him back down.  This works his core, back, shoulder, and arm muscles.  We started doing this because he HATES tummy time and wasn't getting much of a workout that way.  He barely will make an attempt to hold his head up and cried after only a few minutes.  We still make him do it every day but you would think we were torturing him!  He loves his baby sit-ups, though, and they've really helped him with holding his head and body up unsupported.

  • We have a Bumbo and I put DS it in daily for little chunks of time - he really likes it, but it is obvious that he is not fully ready for it yet as he tires easily and begins to droop his head.  He loves the independence it gives him - atleast I think so because he smiles SO big when he's in there.  He is rolling now and pushing up a lot more and he loves to do both, big smiles and laughing while he does it.  But after a while he gets upset because he can't roll back the other way.  IMO push ups and tummy time are better ways to strengthen their core.

  • LO likes the Bumbo and we use it a lot, but I don't think it helps teach her to sit or does anything to help strengthen her muscles.  It just gives her a different place to hang out.  LO usually sits in it to watch me cook or do laundry, so I use it mostly as a "new" place when I need to get something done.
  • Now that he is learning to sit up, I will put him in his bumbo longer. He doesn't like it for too long, so it's only for 15 or 20 minutes.
  • We just got one and love it. It also helps to get her off her back more during the day. The only thing is is that she's a long baby and the neck rest area is way below where her neck is so she tends to be a little wobbly.

  • I think it helps. I started Stella in it around 3 months and she loves it! Though, she didn't at first, I think it was hard for her. But now she is trying to sit up on her own alot. Even my obgyn who saw her recently commented on how strong she was and that she may sit up early. If anything, it's convenient because I tote the Bumbo around for her to sit in while I get things done around the house. I think it makes her feel like a big girl. :)
  • I wouldn't say the Bumbo helped his muscles significantly, but it was great to have so that he could watch us make dinner or do the dishes. Tummy time doesn't allow quite the range of vision that a chair does and I prefer the Bumbo to a recliner chair because it probably does work his core at least a little.
