If you have a small/mid sized SUV-come in

I've just begun my search for one.  I currently have a car, and I'm afraid she's on her last legs.  It's a shame too-I was really enjoying not having a car payment.

Anyhoo-I'm totally overwhelmed by the choices out there.  And none of my friends have SUV's.  They all drive cars or trucks.

So, tell me what you have, and what you do and don't like about it.  Please, and thank you!

  • We love our Nissan Murano.  Its big enough to hold a good amount, but small enough to not feel like I'm driving a semi.  Mine is a 2005.  We did tons of research before we bought it - we were TTC at the time, so had a family vehicle in mind.  We've never had a single disappointment with it.

  • I had a Honda CRV for about 3 years.  I'll forever miss that car - she was my best, good, favorite car ever. Super peppy & fun to drive.  I love the space in the back.  I had a 2005 which had a table under the floor mat in the cargo space - a fully functional table like a card table - pretty fun.

I had zero issues, we bought it new and it was fully warranted the whole time we had it.  We just decided to try for #3 and we chose to move up to the Odyssey.  We'll probably buy a used one in the next year/2 for DH to have for a work vehicle.

  • I have a Nissan Rogue--- LOVE LOVE it. We actually had our eye on  the Murano, but the Rogue was so much cheaper, almost the same in size and had much better gas mileage.

MH is in need of a new car  now too, but I refuse to be dorks and drive the same car, otherwise we would get a 2nd Rogue. So, I am thinking we will end up with a Chevy Traverse, or one of the Hundai suv's. Or, a Ford Edge.

  • I have a Toyota RAV 4, and I find it to be the perfect sized car. It's peppy, easily fits car seats and all related kid crap. I've had no problems with mine so far (got it in '06). Love it!

  • Wr have a Mazda CX-9 that I love. We got it because someone rammed into the back of Mike's Mazda 3. We had no problems at all with his car and wanted another Mazda. I love the GPS, rear camera, drop-down DVD player, iPod inputs, Bluetooth, and easy access to the 3rd row. There's also a lot of space in the trunk when you're using the 3rd row. A lot of the other cars we looked at didn't have much space, the explorer especially comes to mind. Overall I like it and am really happy with our choice. We also looked at the Dodge Journey, Outlook, Traverse, and the Highlander.

We love our Honda Pilot.  Not sure if that is too large for you.

I love how reliable Honda's are. It is nice but not luxurious.  If I were looking now, I'd look at the CRV, Pilot, MDX and the Highlander. I'm partial to Japanese cars myself because of the reliability.

  • I also had a Honda CR-V.  I bought it new in 2003 and got rid of it in late 2009.  I love, love, loved it, I had no complaints.
  • Ford escape.  Love love love love love it.

We have had two carseats back there, as well as an adult, and it wasn't too bad!

Thing I hate about it?  My car sometimes has to be in neutral to get the trunk to open. I keep meaning to get this looked at...

  • I had a CRV for a long time and LOVED it! When we had to replace it we moved up to an Odyssey so that we'd still have plenty of room when we eventually have baby #3.

  • We had a Mazda 5 as a rental one time and I fell in love with it.  I'm really against driving a bigger car than I need and it's not much bigger than our Subaru (which we still need for the AWD capability).  The Mazda 5 is big enough for 2 kids and 2 dogs (we need that cargo space in the back for dogs and most SUV's don't really have much).  It also has an optional 3rd row that will be great as the kids get older and we could use the space for a friend or 2 (or any other passengers for that matter).  It also has sliding side doors like a minivan which is awesome to prevent door dings in the parking lot.

  • I have an FJ Cruiser and I love it.  I am not a big fan of "mom" cars, I wanted something tough and rugged that I didn't have to worry about getting ruined for now.   I LOVE that it has a plastic interior that can be scrubbed and hosed down, the removable seat covers that can be thrown in the laundry, the tall ceilings so we can thrown in surfboards and snowboards above the car seats...it is just pretty bad ass.

I don't like that it is a bit of a squeeze to fit someone in between the 2 car seats, and having an infant carrier make you have to sit up pretty far.  Thankfully, Grey grew out of his carrier after a few months, so we were good after that.

  • I loved my CR-V.  I recently got an MDX and love it so much!  It's the perfect mix of luxury and functionality.
  • Another CRV lover here. Mine is an 07. No complaints. It handles like a car-it actually handles better than my Saturn Sedan (L200). It's great in the snow too.
