Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

How did you choose a name/gender (if too early to know) for lost LO?

Since I was about 9 weeks along it was too early to know baby's gender, but all along we felt strongly it was a boy.

I feel the need/desire to name the baby, so we've decided we'll *assume* the baby was a boy.

We're leaning towards "Christopher" because of the religious connections ("Christ"), and because he's the Patron Saint of safe travels (which seems appropriate and ironic at the same time).

If you chose them, how did you choose a name/gender for baby--if it was too early to know baby's gender or it you already knew?

  • I *needed* to now, which was in part why I opted for genetic testing after the D&C, for my own sanity and closure. All along while PG, I was referring to the baby as "Gummy Bear" and that's the name that has stuck and how I will think of her. I did find out about 2 weeks after the D&C that it was indeed a girl. Not knowing that beforehand, I'm still sticking with Gummy Bear.

  • We had nn for all the babies, so we have just stuck with those. They were gender neutral, obviously.

We know our third loss was a little boy (even though I was only at 8 weeks, we had a genetic analysis done and they were able to determine his gender), but we have stuck with the nn Pumpkin, because that is how we always thought of him.

  • We also had a nickname for our baby, it was a combination of the boy and girl names we had picked out ("Brangelina" style, if you will).  So that is what we call the baby, or just shorten it to "Baby M" (the first letter of the nn).

  • I also "felt" like I was going to have a boy, so DH let me name "him" whatever I wanted.  I chose Adam and that is what we go by.  We both figure if I was wrong, we'll call her Addy when we see "her" in heaven... and we hope she forgives us :)

  • I started lightly spotting on a Friday and Saturday night I dreamed I took two tests and we found out it was a girl.  The next morning we went into the hospital bc the bleeding got worse and found out we were having a miscarriage.  So we named our little girl Hadley Grace.  It has seriously helped to name our child.
