Do you have a recalled crib?

Are you still using it?  I read something that said that the drop-side cribs aren't inherently dangerous, its just that there are higher safety standards now than when they were manufactured.  The ones that malfunctioned, apparently, were due to wear and tear and were over 10 years old.

I saw a gorgeous iron crib that I love but its drop-side.  I know that a lot of people still use them, but wanted to get y'alls opinions on them.

Re: Do you have a recalled crib?

  • The crib that we use at my mom's house is a drop-side crib.  It has never been recalled & is a hand-me-down from my cousin's daughter.

For the current stage that we are at, I don't see how it is dangerous - DD doesn't do that much pulling up on the side and doesn't put a lot of "strain" on the crib in general.  I can totally see how as she gets older (and starts climbing on the sides) they can be considered "less safe" than a non-drop side crib.  But, we use this crib maybe a weekend a month so I'm less concerned about it than I would be if it was our everyday crib.

I'll be honest...I would be more concerned about an iron crib than I would a drop side.  I can't tell you how many times DD has bonked her head on her crib and we even have evil, evil bumpers in ours.  I can't imagine how much more it would hurt if it was iron as opposed to wood.

This was my first thought also.

[And we also have evil, evil bumpers.]

  • So, if I bought an iron crib and put evil bumpers in it, her head would explode?  Damn.
  • We have a drop side as our crib.  I am really not very worried about it.  Ours is in very good shape and I think the latch on the drop side seems very sturdy--I have to lift the side before I can push the lever to drop it.  We don't ever drop it as we are tall.

I also have evil bumpers on mine.  Is the crib you are looking at all iron?  I am having a hard time picturing an iron crib...

it's very pretty.  I guess my issue would be that baby, once they were rolling and moving, would bump its head on the metal and hurt him/herself.  Do you have to have full bumpers like that or could you go with the short ones to help with ventilation?

  • I use a recalled crib--it wasn't recalled when we first got it for DD#1, but now is for DD#2. We just added a couple extra screws to turn the dropside into a stationary side and we also turned that side to the wall. Works great and looks beautiful with all the other furniture we bought to match it.
  • ours is drop side.  i climb in and out of it at least once a week putting quite a bit of weight on the drop side and have never had an issue.  its not recalled (and yes i climb in my kid's crib.  she loves it.  we're goofy like that)

i have friends with an iron crib and have never mentioned it being an issue. i dont think your baby will hurt themselves on it any more than a wooden bed i guess?

  • Ours has been recalled twice now too. We traded it the first time but this time, we just did like pp said and added extra screws.  We also turned the drop side to be along the wall since we never used the drop side feature to begin with.   We have the bad bad bumpers on ours too.  i'm all sorts of taboo....  :O

yeah, I was also wondering how a wood is any more safe than metal. I think the issue w the drop side cribs was with inferior plastic parts. I've read the older drop side cribs are actually better because of the metal parts but also that you shouldn't use a crib more than 10 years old anyway. So, confusing information out there.
