So for the past several years doves have attempted to build nests in our yard...but have not selected good spots. Once or twice it was on top of a 4x4 beam that supports the patio, but both sides of it are exposed. Good solid wind knocked down the nest and eggs that were incubating inside.
3 years now they have unsuccessfully attempted a very small spot on top of a speaker box on the patio..see that small black box near the top of the picture...and notice the smashed egg on the ground? (The smashed egg happened today, but I haven't seen any birds up there for a couple weeks, when half the nest and 1 egg fell).
This led me to think that doves, while the bird of peace, were just plain dumb.
But this year, in addition to the speaker location, there are 2 other dove nests in actually decent spots. Once is in our lemon tree and the other is in the roses outside my kitchen window (this seems like a great spot because it gets A LOT of shade which seems like a good idea in sunny hot Tucson). Maybe they aren't as stupid as I thought...maybe they're just slow learners
The Lemon Tree
Close-up - nest is located about halfway up the tree on to the left of center

Taken from just inside my kitchen window - nest is located just to the right of the top of the left show arch

I can't wait to watch the baby birds outside the kitchen window! (And I didn't actually get this close to the birds, I used the zoom feature on the camera).
