NBR - ? about deveining shrimp

so when i buy shrimp, i get the bags of raw, deveined and individually quick frozen shrimp.

but when i go to cut the tails off, i notice that while the vein along the backside has been removed, there's still a dark vein on the inner-side.

does anyone know what this vein is, why it *hasn't* been removed, and is it necessary to remove?

(i do on basis of ick factor, knowing what the vein on the outside is and just incase this inside vein is similar... but i'm getting lazy and tired of the extra deveining of shrimp every time i want some.)

  • DH and I always comment about this - the shrimp have 2 veins, but the only devain the one side.  I guess they figure you can't see the underside.  Sometimes we remove it, sometimes we don't.  I figure how bad shrimp poop be? I mean, really, what are they eating?

  • So i had to search to figure this one out.  I never knew what the underside one was either.

Here is the answer i just found:

" it's the main nerve bundle (like our spinal cord). It's not toxic, nor does it have the bacteria-carrying potential of the alimentary canal on the top side of the shrimp. Take it out if you have time (I think it looks prettier without!), but leaving it in isn't going to hurt you.
