Babies: 0 - 3 Months

If you have a toddler and a NB...

Do you still use a baby monitor for the toddler? Do you use one for the NB too? This wont be an issue for a bit because DD#2 will be in a bassinet in our room for a while but I'm thinking ahead.

I would prefer to have one for both the NB and my toddler. DD#1 has always slept with some sort of sound track on and I want to do the same with DD#2 because DD#1 is a great sleeper! I dont have to tip toe and whisper during naps, she is used to noise when she sleeps, so I would like for DD#2 to be the same way, but I was thinking that if I have something on in the NB room too then I will be bombarded with music/white noise in my room. Anyone have a solution for this? And can anyone recommend a good monitor with two stations or do you have to use two different monitors on different frequencies?

Thanks for any input!

Re: If you have a toddler and a NB...

  • We have the infant summer day/night video monitor.  It has two channels, so each child gets his/her own.  I have 1 receiver and a camera in each room.  We really only use them for the video portion as our house is pretty small.

  • Yes, we are currently using a monitor for both. For DS, we actually also have a video monitor since he sometimes gets out of bed and I like to know what he is up to. We will probably either ditch that soon or transfer to DD's room.

Anyhow, it's a bit nuts, but at night I have both sound monitors (2 Sony Babycalls) next to my side of the bed. DS is pretty much always good all night, so I just turn his to the setting where it only makes noise if he does (crying, talking, etc.). We have white noise in his room, but I only hear it if he makes enough sound to set off the monitor. So it's mostly quiet. With DD, I have hers in the "always on" position for now since she tends to grunt and make smaller noises all night. I don't want to miss something with her. She also has white noise (either the fan or sleep sheep), so I do hear it through the monitor. But I'm actually ok with that since I sleep with white noise myself when I'm sans children.

We love our Sony Babycall monitors. You can set them for different frequencies and we have had very little interference in our house full of electronic devices. And I like that it has a setting for only coming on when noise is being made (bad description, but you  KWIM).

I'm sure there is a monitor that has two stations, but we already had ours, so didn't want to spend more money.

  • We have two monitors.  We have the Sony Babycall and the Summer video monitor.  The Babycall is nice because you can set it on noise activate if you want so white noise doesn't come through unless another noise (baby crying) sets it off.  Video monitor is nice to be able to see what is going on (we bought it for baby but found we like using it for DS1).  We opted not to go with the one monitor/two stations because I want to hear both and not worry I am on station 2 when station 1 is crying.

  • I have a summer video monitor for each room (different models, so different receivers). For audio only, I really like the Sony babycall. As far as white noise, we ALL have our own sound machines in this house, set to rain, so the sound coming over the monitor blends in and doesn't bother me.

  • We hadn't used DD's monitor for about 8mos so we're just using that one for DS now. We find that even though he's in our room in a pnp, I like to know when he wakes from naps during the day or at night if I'm still up and out in the LR. We have the one called Sounds and Lights or something.

DD has a sound machine in her room set on "rain" sounds so we bought another of the same for DS so he can be used to that sound as he's going into her room once he sttn. We also do not keep things hush hush for the kids while they sleep but the sound machine, while as an added benefit buffers some sounds, helps them sleep better anyway, imo.

  • I have never heard of these "noise only activated" monitors! I could get one of those for DD#1's room and move hers to DD#2's room. Thanks ladies! I'll be here in less than 5 weeks (scheduled c/s)!

  • We have two summer infant handhelds. We went with what we know, we are happy with that one. it probably would have been fine just to buy an audio one for DDs room for night, and use the video one for DS room. But one monitor with 2 cameras wasn't an option for us bc we need 2 audio monitors at night. Obv don't need the camera while we are sleeping, but I still want to hear DD in case she cries or gets sick or something. She is still in a crib. During the day it would be fine to have one video monitor and just switch back and forth.

  • We haven't used a monitor for DS for about a year.  We'll be using the video monitor and the Angelcare Monitor that we used for DS with DD as soon as she moves to her crib.
