Re: Grass fed, what do you pay?

  • I pay $5.99/lb for pastured grass fed hamburger @ WF. It is not organic. If you buy 3 lbs or more you get it for $4.99 instead.

Once in a while they have a sale. I think the cheapest I have seen it has been $3.50/lb or so, but that is extremely rare that it will be on sale.

WF also sells organic free range chicken breast for around $6.99/lb.

  • I pay $4.50/lb for grassfed hamburger, but that's when the farmer has it on sale.
  • I sell mine for about $3 a pound but you have to buy half an animal for the beef I don't raise chickens so I have no idea what I would have to sell them for to make money.

In LA, it's 5.99/lb for ground beef, but that's only when WF has it on sale (otherwise it's 9 or 10, no kidding) or if I go to the ONE farmer's market with the ONE guy selling beef (and pork).  Steaks are way higher, so those prices look okay to me.  I pay close to $20 a pound for steaks (ribeye, NY strip, filet).

Chicken is usually 6 or 7 a pound, either at WF or TJ's.  But I'm not sure any of it is truly pasture-fed, so your chicken sounds better, esp. if it's local.

  • When we buy our 1/2 cow (grass-fed, local, organic) we pay $3/lb and we get a mix of cuts/ground beef.  Of course, we're friends of the farmer.
