    You can go with more than 3 if you have them blended/complementary/etc. I've seen fairly open floor plans with several earth tones that looked fabulous.

    I think if they're just different shades in some case, you can do more than 3.  I would have said 4 would be too much, though.

    never limit yourself. I'm not saying go all Lisa Frank meets Jackson Pollock, but many more than three can be done in a tasteful way.

    We aren't TERRIBLY open, but we have a small condo.  Our living room is a khaki/green with a lighter accent color on the fireplace wall...our dining room is a relatively bright blue, though we're planning to go with an earth-toned orange or a dustier blue that will blend better.  Annnd, our kitchen is green and white.  I don't like the kitchen at all, so we're planning to redo it sometime after baby.  The colors don't work at all with anything else we have...but I don't feel like we MUST use one of the colors from the living room or dining room.  We'll probably pull in those colors, though, and have some pieces in all three rooms that tie the colors together.  We took pics into our local Benjamin Moore and got some really good suggestions on pulling the rooms together without NEEDING to have the same colors/decor in all of them.

     

    I think the lighting and windows in the area make a huge difference, too....

    Okay, I have to say that I'm surprised by the results.  I think I need to save up to hire an interior decorator...clearly.

    If you count the sponge look in the living room then we have 3 different colors going on. If not then we have 2. But I would say 4 is going to far.
