Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

How long did you stay out of work after your m/c?

The ER took me out of work and put me on bed rest until I saw my OB this coming week. I talked to my doctor's office yesterday after I found out that I have already miscarried and the nurse told me I could go back to work now if I wanted. She did suggest I take a few days off to grieve, relax etc because I am still pretty sore.

I haven't told work that I have had a miscarriage yet, I just can't make the telephone call because I will break down and cry. I am debating going back on Monday but with my note it says "until cleared by doctor" so until I tell work I have been cleared they wouldn't know and they would just keep using up my sicktime.

I just don't know how long to stay out for. I want to go back to get out of the house and try to get a sense of normalcy again but then again I don't want to deal with people asking questions and the occassional breakdown I am bound to have.

so, how long did you stay out of work for after your miscarriage?

  • I only took a week off. Now thinking back I should have took longer but sitting at home was driving me crazy. I had to do something to try and keep my mind busy. I say take as long as you see fit.

I started spotting on a Friday at work and went home (it was about 10am so I took the whole).  Then I went back to work Monday after my OB said it was prob nothing and I had my u/s scheduled for Tuesday.  Tuesday morn we found out about the BO at my appointment and I started to miscarry within 30 minutes of getting home from the OB's office.  I was home Tues-Thurs and went back to work on Friday.  So including that Friday before the m/c really started I took 4 days.  I could have stayed home Friday and went back Monday but I thought it would be good to go in for one day and then have the weekend to ease myself back into work.

  • I didn't take any time off but I naturally m/c on Saturday.  I work from home, so it's a little different - but I do have teleconferences and meetings every day.

If my m/c had fallen during the week, I would have taken 2 days off.  Instead it just ruined my 4th of July weekend.

  • I took a week off as well.  I know its hard to call and tell your work -- I did break down crying while on the phone with my supervisor when I told her.  Of course it is a personal decision whether you tell them or not, but telling my boss was the best decision for me and she was amazingly understanding, and let me have as much time off as I needed.  Also, that way I knew she didn't think I was just playing hookey, you know?

Good luck to you making this decision.  Just don't forget to take time for yourself, and don't worry about rushing back to work if you think you need more time to heal.  And I'm so sorry for your loss.  ((hugs))

  • For me I couldnt sit at home.. In fact the morning we found out we had m/c I was back at work 1 hour later (Thursday) came in friday to do some stuff.  I induced my m/c with cytotec over the weekend and was back in the office monday.  I just couldnt sit and dwell on it that is how my MIL is and it consumes her... it was better for me to be at work and be productive... for me that was normalcy..

  • I took a week off - I started spotting last Sunday night, went in to work on the next morning, but the cramping and spotting were getting heavier so I went home at noon. I miscarried on Tuesday but the pain continued into Friday. I was back to work on Monday (of this week...)

Honestly, for me, I wish I'd taken a few more days - I've been crying at my desk pretty much every day this week. But I don't know that things would have been different had I stayed home...

Hugs to you. I'm so sorry you're going through this :(

  • I found out when I went for my second ultrasound on Wednesday and couldn't get an official ultrasound till later that day so I didn't go in to work that day. I went in for a few hours the next morning but my boss sent me home because he didn't want me working and being upset so I didn't work Thursday or Friday. My D & C was scheduled for the next wednesday so I went in Monday and Tuesday to work then took off Wednesday, Thursday and Friday off because he let me fly back home to ohio and recover with my significant other and famiily.

  • I took off 9 days when I had my first daughter, and with my second daughter I had a csection and had off for 8 weeks.  It was probably 5 weeks though, before I felt back to normal physically.  I was ready to go back.

  • I started bleeding 7/2 in the morning.  I went to work that day, but ended up leaving around 3:30pm to go to the ER.  Because it was a holiday weekend, I had Monday off, but I worked the rest of the week.  So, I guess I took 1.5 hours off?

  • I took all of this past week off, waiting to miscarry. It didn't happen naturally and had D&C today and my boss told me to take all of next week too. My job (interrogator) requires me to "be there" 100% and could have legal ramifications if the interrogation goes south because I'm "off".

  • I stayed home for one week, but I did some work from home and emailed it in. I needed to keep myself busy and do something besides cry.
