TTC After a Loss

Bicornuate "Heart shaped" Uterus

Anyone else with this type of uterus? I just found out this week and have been reading a lot about it online. My husband and I have an appt with a fertility specialist in a couple weeks to go over it as well.

Re: Bicornuate "Heart shaped" Uterus

  • I thought I did for awhile, but now we know it is a septate uterus.  The Bicornuate has better rates for carrying pregnancy, although I'm sure there are always extremes that don't fit within the type studied by the statistics.  I'm sure your specialist will be very helpful - good luck!

  • Hmm that is interesting. My husband was saying that the dr at the ER had told us it was only slightly bicornuate, but I can't remember him saying that. It was pretty hectic though at the time, so I am sure the specialist will do an ultrasound and let us know the shape for sure. Thanks so much for responding.

  • Not a problem at all!  I found this site a little helpful, although it is clinical terminology it explains the different types.  I had to rely on my DH as well b/c I didn't remember much of anything that was said!  https://www.mosaictelecom.com/~mickbeth/faq2008.htm#2
  • Thank you so much! Now I wish I had known exactly what the doctor had told me!

  • I wish you luck with your fertility specialist and they can tell you exactly what your uterus is. While pregnant, my OB, a radiologist at the hospital and my high risk OB couldn't tell if my uterus was a septate or bicornuate. After our loss, I had 2 MRIs, a hysterosonogram, and a sonohysterogram. Finally, they decided after comparing all if the tests that I had a septate uterus, with a complete split. Like ready2bepg said, a bicornuate is better for carrying a baby, because if the placenta attaches to the septum with a septate uterus there won't be enough blood supply. A bicornuate will put you at risk for preterm labor, small and breach baby. I had my septum removed last month. The doctor who did my surgery said I also had a slight dip at the top so that is probably why they had so much trouble figuring it out.

  • I hope you don't mind me answering.  I have a Bicornuate uterus.  I had tons of testing when I was ttc.  I tried for 15 months after my 1st loss and they never told me I had this.   I also had HCG which did not detect it.  They found out when I went into Labor at 30 weeks my LO was transveres so I needed a csection and when they went into do it that's when they found it.   Like PP said your chances for PT Labor are greater with this.  However it doesn't mean they can't stop it they will just have to watch you more closely if you decide against surg to fix it.  If you have any other questions please feel free to PM me.  Good luck!!

You could probably request copies of the medical records from your visit.  I called the medical records dept of my hospital to find out about requesting the records from my DD's birth.  They mailed me a form to fill out to submit a written request--still have to do that.
