1st Trimester

Flying in the first trimester

I know its safe and I have had friends that have done so, I guess I just need some reassurance.  I have a work conference that will take me away for a few days, the flight will be 2.5 hours. It is okay to fly in the first trimester, right?

Re: Flying in the first trimester

  • I would think so. I've never heard of restrictions. I flew with my first pregnancy at 8 weeks along. Just make sure you take with you in your carry on anything that you may need to combat any nauseous feelings! I was a constant snacker during that pregnancy and had a lot of Cheez-Its in my duffle bag!

  • Yeah. Anytime you fly PG, you should tell your OB, and request a copy of your records in case you need to be seen where you are traveling to, but other than that, go for it!

  • I flew out the day I got my BFP with DS2 on a 9 hour trip and then back again 14 days later.  I was going to fly again this year smack dab in the middle of my first and second trimester had the flight prices not tripled this year.  I've flown later on in my second trimester too but not had any problems.  Your flight is so short, if it were longer I would suggest keeping moving even in your seat and keeping hydrated, but 2.5 hours is nothing more than a car journey so I think you will be ok.

If in doubt though and or want some reassurance I would call your DR/OB.

  • Most say you can fly up to 32 weeks. I flew to 36 because I live on the edge.

realistically, if anything happened at 8 weeks, no amount of medical intervention would matter.

  • I took two 2.5 flights last week. The only thing is to try to get up and walk at least once to keep the blood flowing in your legs (to avoid clots) but this early in the pg, it's not as big a concern as the second and third trimesters. GL
  • yes,  I flew with my daughter at 7 weeks, 15 weeks and twenty something weeks.  I am flying today too!  Just make sure you get up at least once or so and move around.  Keep yourself hydrated and bring something for nausea.  Enjoy your trip!

  • I asked my OB because we will be flying next month.  He said it was perfectly fine but to make sure that you get up and stretch your legs and walk a bit every hour.

  • I flew to Europe and back at 7 weeks pregnant. It is not an issue. I will be flying domestically for 5 hours each way at 12 weeks, then again at 24 weeks and 28 weeks. Like everyone else said, stay hydrated, bring snacks and move every once in a while. Have a good trip!

  • I flew all the time when I was pregnant with DD, the only thing I would not suggest is flying at/after 34 weeks ( I went into premature labor..thankfully they were able to stop it). First trimester flying will be a breeze. Just drink plenty of water and make sure to get up once and a while!
