Would you call the ped?

DD has had diarrhea for 2-3 days.  Last night she had it twice in her sleep (didn't wake up), and had a massive blowout.  DH did all the cleaning, so I'm not sure what it was like.

Her poops have been really inconsistent - watery/mucousy sometimes, tarry others.

She isn't acting sick at all, other than taking about an hour-long nap this morning earlier than she normally does.

We thought it was from giving her dairy-based formula.  It still could be that, but we haven't given her any since yesterday morning.

She is not vaccinated against Rotavirus, if this sounds like it could be Rotavirus.

So - would you call the ped?  Or just keep giving her water and the BRAT diet and nursing?

Re: Would you call the ped?

  • is she having regular wet diapers?  if not, i'd call the pedi b/c babies can get dehydrated really quickly.

  • It could still be the dairy formula.  It takes up to 2 weeks to get milk protein out of the system.  As long as she has enough wet diapers, like joes says I'd wait a day or two to call.  But if she is seeming lethargic and/or not having wet diapers, call.

I say this unless mommy gut says otherwise and look up dehydration symptoms in infants so you know what to look for. In my experience, pedis don't do anything unless it really looks like they are dehydrated, otherwise they'll just tell you to keep her hydrated.

  • Thanks, ladies.  Yes, she's still having wet diapers, but I'll be sure to monitor them extra closely for the next few days.
