Infertility

If you've had a m/c, please come in

Hi ladies,

Long story short, after almost 3 years TTC and on our 4th IUI (1st injectable cycle), I finally got a BFP.  Saw a hb at 7w, was released to my OB and at my first appt. at 10w with OB, no hbSad.  Had a D&C for a missed m/c (baby measured 9 wks).  Here I am almost a month later, bleeding just stopped yesterday!!!!!

I had my 2nd follow-up with RE today.  He wasn't surprised I bled so much.  After the first follow-up a week after the D&C, he saw a lot of tissue and clotting and my ovaries were still extremely enlarged from the injects (I had mild OHSS the first few weeks of pregnancy).  Today, he said everything looks all clear and ovaries are back to normal size again.

He told me let's take the summer off and give my body a chance to recover, etc. and call him after labor day to come back and start treatment again.  He said no restrictions; we didn't need to use condoms, etc.  I was a little surprised.  I said I don't even need to wait until AF comes back??  He said nope, everything was all clear, there would be no harm if I "miraculously got pregnant on my own this summer" (I really did not like that wording!!!).

Of course, he said we don't know when AF will show, it may take longer (I used to have an exact 28 day cycle).  I was just wondering if any of you ladies were told the same thing after experiencing a m/c?  I would have thought to at least wait one AF cycle, etc.?  TIA.

  • I'm so sorry cutie, it sucks :(  (((HUGS)))

I had a m/c but needed D&C and was told AF could show up anywhere from 4-6 weeks later.  It showed up 3 weeks after D&C for me.

I started BCP on cd3 for FET.

I wish I had more answers.

    GL moving forward

  • I am so very sorry to hear of your loss :(

After my D&C I was told to wait 2 cycles to start trying again. Don't know if the reason was physically, mentally or both?!? Regardless, we waited 2 cycles & continued on our journey.

    Best of luck to you...

  • I am so sorry for you loss but I wanted to tell you I was told the same thing by my OB - I went in for my check up 3 weeks after my D&E and asked if I need to use protection for a few months and he said with our history there was no need too - and now six months after our miscarriage - I am still not pregnant so I guess he was right.

I'm so sorry for your loss.  I had a natural mc at 7 weeks and got AF exactly 28 days later (I was charting and didn't ovulate in that time).  I was told I didn't need to wait once AF showed and started Clomid that cycle.

  • First of all, I am so sorry you are going through this. While a m/c is always difficult, it's so hard to wait so long to be pg and then have that happen. With both of my m/c I had D&C's since they were missed m/c. After my first D&C, my OB said to wait two cycles, and after my second, my RE said to wait until I got my period. I think a lot of Drs advise to wait a cycle or two so that in case you get pg you have some kind of marker when you conceived and can date the pregnancy? Or maybe there are certain hormones that are brought back into balance when you have your period? I've also heard that it's to allow the patient to have some time to heal emotionally.

As for the bleeding, I seemed to bleed more with my second D&C, I'm not sure if my RE was just more careful and didn't get everything? The bleeding was also stop and start. I had some spotting the first few days after the procedure and then more a week or two after that. AF showed up I believe about 5-6 weeks after the D&C, but everyone is different.

I hope the rest of this process goes smoothly for you!

  • We also saw heartbeat at 6 and 8 weeks then at the 10 week appt it had stopped in week 9. I had to have a D&C and also bled for a month. My RE checked me in 8 weeks. When I didn't get AF at 10 weeks he gave me pills and then we cycled after AF came.

I am sorry about your loss.

  • Doctors seem to be split pretty evenly on this topic--some recommend waiting for 2-3 cycles; others say, go ahead and try. A lot of it has to do with the balance of hormones; you might conceive naturally immediately following a miscarriage, but fail to produce enough progesterone to sustain the pregnancy, thus causing another miscarriage. For us, our chances of conceiving being so low, we were never told to wait. For both of our miscarriages, I continued temping and charting throughout the after-period, so that I could easily note the point where my cycle returned to normal, but we didn't use any method of birth control or "wait," to try, we continued as usual.

I'm not sure of all the reasons why a doctor might recommend you wait, but in your case, it does seem as though you might have had some physical trauma to recover from and "not trying" might be beneficial. I still wouldn't use birth control, though.

In any case, I came out of lurkdom just to tell you I'm so sorry for your loss.

  • When I had my m/c, I didn't need a D&C but I had a methotrexate shot and start bleeding 2 days after the shot and continued to bleed on and off for over 3 weeks. Then about 3 weeks later AF came. I was told to wait 2 cycles before trying again. I'm sorry you are going through this.

  • I'm so sorry about your loss.

After my 2 week check after the d+c at 10 weeks I was given the green licght to TTC immediately if I wanted to. My period came on cd33 whereas my cycles were 28-29 days normally.

  • I had a D&E/termination at ~12 weeks after a tragic NT scan. The maternal fetal medicine doctor said we should wait 3 months or more to try again. She said this decreases my chances of future miscarriage and that a wait of 18 months is ideal. She did say that at 39, she won't tell me to wait that long, but they still recommend 3 months.

However, the RE said I only had to wait until AF comes to begin a donor cycle (which takes longer than a typical cycle). Turns out my D&E was incomplete and I need another, but even then my RE (who is doing the D&C this time) will start me on a new donor cycle as soon as AF comes after the repeat procedure.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

  • They wanted me to wait 3 months to start any medications (clomid at the time)... but they didnt say we couldnt keep trying TI...  I read that women get really fertile after a m/c, and although it didnt work for me, I do know 3 co-workers who said they got pg the month after their m/c
  • Hi hon :)

I am so glad that the bleeding finally stopped. After my D&E I was told to wait for AF to come twice before TTC again. However, I know of other ladies who were told just one cycle. I have a friend IRL (very fertile) who got pg right after her D&E, and everything is fine.

For me, AF came about 4 weeks after my D&E both times.

  • We had our d&c's on the same day :-(

Oddly, I didn't bleed at all but I was told by my doc to wait until I had one normal af before trying again.  I'm guessing that has to do with letting my uterus build up a lining and shed it and then the doc is assuming things will be back to normal.  Considering how much you bled perhaps he doesn't feel you need to wait and apparently, he doesn't think you stand much shot of getting pregnant on your own anyway so maybe he just doesn't think there is a need to prevent.

I haven't gotten af yet and am hoping it shows up soon.  I'm anxious to start trying again.

  • I am hopefully at the tail end of a natural m/c.  We got pregnant "au natural" after waiting to start Gonal F for IUI #3.  However at 8 wk u/s there were no fetal poles detected.  I was told by my OB to wait one full cycle before TTC again.  I also read you should wait at last 1 cycle b/c if you do get BFP right away the possibility of another m/c is greater.  You should probably post also on "Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss" board.  They are great ladies.

  • I had my D&C on 6/28 after a missed miscarriage at 8w5d.  I bled for 6 days then spotted for a couple more.

My RE wants me to get my period in 4-6 weeks. Then start BCP for IVF #3. So I will have 2 periods before our retrieval.

I am sorry for your loss and pray your road ahead is filled with sunshine.

  • I had a natural m/c so I don't know about the D&C but I just wanted to say I'm so sorry for your loss.

  • I just wanted to say thanks for your support and advice ladies and I'm so sorry for all your losses as well.  IF sucks, but then to finally see that BFP and then lose the baby is awful.  It's really really unfair.   I know this might sound horrible, but sometimes I wish I didn't get that BFP.  I know that is terrible to think, at least I know I can get pregnant, right? Because for so long I thought my body just didn't know how to.  I want to try again but am so scared of seeing another BFP (I know I probably sound nuts here)....UUGGHH!!!  I hate this...for myself and all you ladies too.
