Circulation issue? Normal problem, or something to be worried about?

Over the past few days I've noticed Holden's left leg "falling asleep" a lot.  At first I didn't understand what was wrong, but I noticed that after he is sitting for a few minutes he will have a hard time standing up and will make an pained face when he tries to put pressure on it.  This morning when he woke up he couldnt even straighten his left leg out for a good 20 minutes, I actually had to move it and massage it before he could bring his knee down away from his chest.   Then tonight while I was making his dinner he was sitting on the floor playing with some toys and I noticed he was making a pained face, I just thought he was tired but when I walked over to him I could see that his entire left leg was grey and his foot was a light purplish/grey color and he couldnt move it again, I massaged it and moved it for a few minutes and the color came back but now I'm worried...

Has anyone else's lo had this problem?  Is it a normal toddler issue, or should I make a pedi appt?

  • I would call and talk to your pedi, to me it doesn't sound normal but obviously I'm not a professional.

  • Hmmm.  Sounds like a pinched blood vessel.  Good that you can massage and get the color back.  Definitely call your Ped tomorrow, I bet there's something easy to make sure it doesn't keep happening.
  • That doesn't sound normal to me, but that just hasn't been my experience. I would call your pedi just to check. I feel like that would give you some peace of mind. Good luck! I hope its normal and that it goes away quickly so Holden can be able to have fun without pain.

  • Jenn- that does not sound normal. Even when one of our limbs "falls asleep" it does not turn grey or purple. Can you tell if it is fully in the socket? Has he fall on it funny lately? I would take him in if it happens again. If it is turning color (not just a little pink or whitish but purple for sure!) I would take him in right away. Keep us updated.
  • The colour change is reason for concern.  Also, it shouldn't fall asleep when he is lying down, as nothing should be constricting his blood flow.  Are his diapers too tight?  I'd get in ASAP.

  • This does not sound normal to me. I would definitely be making a pedi appt first thing tomorrow morning. No limb should turn to grey or purple if the circulation is normal. Please keep us posted on how hes doing.

  • No that's not normal.  20 minutes is a long time for a limb to be "asleep" and even when your leg falls asleep it doesn't change color... I'd definitely call...  Has he fallen or injured himself at all lately?

  • I agree... call your pedi in the morning! or a nurse line tonight just to get some instant information!

  • Oh, I meant to add that there have been no falls or injuries lately, and when its not acting up he runs around on it just fine.  But in other random leg injury news, my dog has been limping around favoring her rear left leg as well!  Looks like I'll be calling the pedi AND the vet tomorrow!

  • Poor Holden! I hope that the pedi can give you an easy fix, and that the vet has good news about your dog as well.

  • I'm glad you're calling....keep us in the loop and I hope it's an easy fix!
  • Poor Holden Sad We see a chiropractor regularly, so this is something I would take to our chiropractor first. Sounds like something got out of whack though - maybe from a bump or a fall or just getting up oddly.
