Elimination diet ?

Anyone have any good tips for doing this?  DD is doing better without dairy in my diet.  But, she's still having some very mucousy poops everytime she goes.  And she still gets a little rashy, but again not as bad as when I have dairy.  So, how on earth do I do this?  What's left to eat?  And what do I do for condiments like replacing mayo in tuna salad?  I need help.  And FWIW, I'd ask DD's pedi but they don't believe that babies her age can develop food allergies/sensitivities.  They are only working on her reflux because I said something about it at a couple of appointments.

  • Have you eliminated soy?

  • No, it's in everything!
  • Its the soy! LOL......... I have problems with it makes my stomach hurt like crazy and gives me the runs. Everyone kept telling me diary is the problem blah bla blah. I cut out soy and the next day I was a new person.

  • I'll cut the soy from my diet too and see if that helps.  Crap!  I'm running out of things to eat.
  • Coconut, dark chocolate (pure, good stuff), veggies, meat, homemade pasta...hmm...and rhubarb and homemade bread.

  • Ditto soy.  Also, the mayo I buy doesn't have dairy.  It's just egg whites and oil.  Get REAL mayo.  We use olive oil mayo.

And yes, you can eat meat, veggies, bread (you can def. find some w/out soy or dairy or diy it easily), pasta, diy spaghetti sauce.  You just need to be willing to diy more stuff I think, since soy is in so many packaged foods.  I know the living situation kind of hinders things though.

I snack on chips and salsa, hummus, fruit, etc.  You can do this.  It sounds honestly like you are just very negative about the prospect and that is limiting you.  Try to keep your mind open to the idea and you will be amazed at what you can do!  Yes, it's not the same and sometimes it sucks but it is temporary.  She could grow out of it at 9 months old.

I'm here for ideas/support if you need them!

  • I don't have any advice as per the elimination diet, but I can say without a doubt babies can have massive food allergies that little. DS has a severe allergic reaction to peas at 4mo, apricots at 5mo, and at Easter he was given eggs... full blown hives and had a hard time breathing. We had him allergy tested at 9m.

I hope you figure out what the problem is soon. It's hard to see our babies in discomfort. ((hugs))

  • Just wanted to offer my support too.  Eliminating soy can be daunting at first but once you figure out your go to foods, it gets easier.

Some babies can tolerate soy oil and soy lecithin.  Mine couldn't.  If you discover that yours can, you can still eat Oreos (can you believe they don't have dairy in them?!).  Not the greatest, but nice for a quick choc treat when you're deprived.

I used this recipe to make mayo.  I had it on sandwiches but wasn't crazy about it when I tried to make chicken salad.

  • My pedi didn't believe DD was allergic to dairy either.  So after eliminating it for four months, I took his advice and gave her some milk-based formula (my bm dried up not long after I got KU again).  Yeah - she took a couple ounces then promptly projectile vomited all over herself and broke out in eczema that took over a week to go away.  Not allergic, my a$$!  She is still very allergic to cow's milk.  She is also allergic to soy.  It does make eating difficult because soy and/or dairy are in most processed foods.  I loved chocolate sorbet from Trader Joes (no soy or dairy - yay!) and ate a lot of salads with meat and chopped hardboiled eggs. You can still have rice, pasta, bread, beans ... there are a lot of options.  I also found that I could eat coconut macaroons from Whole Foods - they are amazing.  If you end up cutting out soy and you need a milk replacement, read the labels.  I was excited about almond milk, but never found one without soy in it.  I had better luck with rice milk.

(FYI, mayo doesn't usually have dairy in it - read the label - but I never found a soy-free mayo, unfortunately.)

I feel you, though.  I had to avoid dairy, soy, corn (which REALLY rules out processed foods) and gluten for months.  I lost a lot of weight but was miserable.
