One nap or two?

Aiden is one of the world's worst nappers.  I have tried to get him on a two nap/day routine but I can never get him down early enough so he will be willing to nap again in the afternoon.  I worry that if I try one nap he will be too tired later in the day and want to cat nap before bath time (which prompts a horrible bed time).  He sleeps great at night (upwards of 12 hours- around 8-8) but it is hit or miss during the day.  Is he too young to work on a one nap schedule?

Also, would it be a benefit for me to read any of the sleep books?  I didn't know if any focused enough on naps or if they are more geared towards nighttime sleep.  Thanks for any advice!

Re: One nap or two?

  • my little guys still naps in the am, but is getting shorter now.  he normally goes down around 10am and is now napping about 45min - 1 hour.  i never let him nap longer than 1:15 to preserve his afternoon nap.

he goes down around 1:30 and sleeps til about 4pm.  i can tell if  he's tired  early, he rubs his eyes or gets cranky.

i did see someone last week post that they took away their kiddos morning nap and it helped with the afternoon nap.  but, not sure how old they were.

    good luck...

  • try the two three four schedule, that's what worked for us at that age.

two hours after waking, put him down for his first morning nap.  three hours after he wakes up from that, put him down for his afternoon nap.  four hours after that, it's bedtime (in the bed, not starting bedtime routine.)

Marion didn't drop to one nap until a little closer to a year, maybe ten months?  Still pretty early compared to most I think.

  • Thanks ladies! I think we will do a little experimenting and see what happens. I have tried the 2 hours after waking for a nap but he is never game. Maybe I need to wear him out a little more once he gets up :) I will definitely work with the 4 part even if we can't work out the 2/3.
