Rash from CD?

Have any of you had trouble with a persistent diaper-area rash from using CD? Do you know what the cause is?

My LO's butt is just fine, but the area between his penis and the top of the diaper area, and on his upper thighs (still area covered by diaper area) is red and irritated. It has been a little better here and there, but it always gets worse again. We've used a few different kinds of diaper rash cream to no avail, used calendula lotion, switched the type of covers we are using to a more breathable kind (supposedly?), switched to cloth wipes....I dunno what is up.

He is a very hot baby. Could it be heat rash? If so, how can you treat that? We use Country Save Laundry Detergent on his diapers, which is supposed to be just fine. We do an extra rinse. We've got new inserts (to use with the Best Bottom covers) on backorder to use instead of prefolds.

Does anyone have any ideas? It is just in the front and just in the area covered by cloth diapers. If it helps, today he had to use a disposable for the first time in weeks and you could see the irritated area poking well out from where the sposies stopped.

Re: Rash from CD?

  • Since it's just up front where he pees my guess would be a reaction between his pee and the detergent.  My rec would be to switch detergents and see if that helps.

  • My son also has bad diaper rash too. We had to get a cream from the doctor and the rash went away, we also had a break in the humid weather at the same time, now today it seems to be coming back and it was over 100 today (go figure) our doctor suggested a semi cool bath and give him free air time (totally naked on a blanket).
  • From your description, I'd guess it might be a yeast rash.  DD is just getting over one that lasted 3 weeks (although it took me 2 of those weeks to figure out what it was).  I switched her to disposables and used monistat 7 for a week along w/ triple paste and she's as good as new.  Just using Burt's Bee's diaper rash cream at first did nothing, though.  My understanding is that this is one rash that might be more (?) common w/ CDs b/c they tend to stay damper.  You also have to wash your CDs hard (heat/bleach, I believe) to kill the yeast in them if that's what it is.
