Outbreak of canker sores in pregnancy?

I am prone to canker sores, but I usually only get ONE every few months or so. I woke up 3 days ago with THREE whopping sores on my lower lip. I googles canker sores and pregnancy and found that there is a higher chance of getting them while pregnant. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't remember getting them with my DS and I hope this doesn't continue!

Re: Outbreak of canker sores in pregnancy?

  • oh no... I'm prone to them too!  I have heard that we are more prone to anything having to do with teeth, gums, etc.  So far I haven't had an issue.  In the past when I have, I use Listerine like 5 times a day!  It really seems to work.  Also leafy greens (spinach for example) are supposed to help.  Good luck!!

  • I just woke up with one 2 days ago. So glad I'm not the only one. I unusually only get them when I have a high fever or a really bad cold, and I haven't had either of those recently
  • Canker sores are usually a response to stress or physical damage to your mouth (like biting your cheek).  I've had a few, but amazingly not during pregnancy so far.  I think anything that changes the chemistry of your body can bring them on.  You are talking about canker sores and not cold sores right?
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • This happened to me too last week! I hadn't gotten one in well over a year and I woke up to a huge outbreak. I had 4.

It has to be stress or hormone related. I'm hoping this isn't a continuing trend either.

Yup...canker sores. :( I'm thinking mine is more from the hormone change since I haven't been stressed lately. If anything I've been more relaxed than ever. The pharmacy told me to put baking soda on the sores for a few seconds and rinse. It stung for a while, but they do feel better!

  • I haven't but a good friend of mine did.  She is prone to canker sores and usually got them every time she was stressed out but when she was pregnant with both her kids she had them all the time.  Her doc told her that it's common during pregnancy if you have a history of them.

  • Take vitamin B complex (you can pick it up anywhere).  It will turn your pee electric yellow but you will not get another canker sore if you take it daily.  I have been doing it for years (since a colleague recommended it to me) and have not had one since :) Another bonus--it gives you energy!
  • I have a nasty one on my lower gums.  Haven't had one in years but I accredited it more to eating the bag of sour patch kids that tore my mouth up more than I did to pregnancy...hmmm :)

  • It's interesting - there are a lot of things that cause mine to flare up, but some of it is hormonal (would always get them the week before my period).  When I was PG with my DS, I didn't get a single one in the whole 9 months.  This time around, I already have a few.  Maybe I'm having a girl?
  • I switched to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)-free toothpaste and that has made a big difference in the frequency that I get canker sores. You can buy SLS-free toothpaste at some Whole Foods or natural food stores or online. They are a little hard to track down, but well worth it! Personally, I use the Tom's of Maine kind. It will feel different in your mouth (SLS is a foaming agent so SLS-free toothpastes don't foam up that much) but still gives a great clean! I actually don't use any products with SLS in it anymore. It is one of those common ingredients in health and beauty products that is nastier than you'd think should be allowed.

I almost never get them anymore.

  • I am prone to them, but normally only got one right before my period would start, and not even every month.  I do remember with my first pg that there was a time when I had about 3 at once - it was terrible.  But it only happened that one time.
