3rd Trimester

What happens if you never dilate?

I just have a weird feeling that it's never gonna happen... Trying everything but it seems my cervix does not want to cooperate.  My doctor already thinks baby girl is about 8 lbs. (at 37 weeks!) so I'm just wondering what will happen if I never dilate/efface?  Hoping that it's not grounds for a c-section...

  • Dr can always use cervidil.

  • I think it's still way too early for you to be worrying about that. I'm about as far along as you, and I have zero progress, but I know I still have plenty of time. Some women don't dilate until the day they go into labor.

That's true.  I know I just need to give my body time to do whatever it needs to do to have this baby - I just can't help getting so anxious! :)

If medical interventions do not cause dilation, you will need a c/s. My mom never dilated or effaced with us. She said we never dropped either and she had 3 c/s. You have time! Some women need pitocin to start dilating.

Dude, I totally understand. I don't think I really understood what it meant to be impatient before now!

  • What about bouncing on a birthing ball? Maybe that will bring her down some more and get your cervix dilating.

  • I went to 40 wks with no progress.  I was induced with cervadil and pit.  It ended in a section.

If I had to do it all over again I would have opted for the section.  The cervadil did nothing and the pit caused one long contraction without a break for close to three hours before they just took Emerson.  My anesthesiologist had a nine yr old son dying of cancer and was less than adequate to be working at the time.  It was a huge nightmare for me.

  • It is way too early for you to be worrying!! I had no dialation AT ALL until yesterday, and I know some girls on here past their due date who hadn't dilated yet and went on to have no problems dilating/effacing and giving birth. Your body might just wait until labour to do anything.

  • despite best efforts i couldnt dilate, ended up with a c section, among other reasons too..

I was induced at 41 weeks after absolutely no dilation.  I had a difficult but successful vaginal birth.
  • Didn't dilate at all until 41 weeks and some help from pitocin with DD... I'd already started having contractions, just didn't seem to want to dilate.

Went on to have a normal, healthy vaginal birth.  Don't worry!

  • You have way to long to be thinking about this already.  Your going to drive yourself silly.  The average 1st birth happens at 41 weeks 1 day and the average 2nd at 40 weeks 4 days.

  • I know you have already had like a bajillion posts tell you this but really don't worry about that yet, it is too soon. It may take you until 39-40-41 weeks to dilate and if you start worrying about it already now you will be disaster by then! I was so hopeful for signs of progress at my first internal at 37 weeks and was so disappointed to find I was measuring at nothing, 0%, 0cm. Got so excited for my second internal at 38 weeks because I was feeling pains and certain there would be some signs of progress and...still 0%, 0cm. It's so silly because it doesn't mean anything and yet I was so horribly depressed after that. I have my 39 week appointment coming up and have learned by now not to expect anything. Plus keep in mind you could dilate a little and stay that way for weeks just as easily as you could be at 0cm one day and going into labor the next. It's just a measure of where you are at that point in time but since there's not set rate it means little else. Good luck!

  • I had no progress until today. Finally dilating and 40% plus babys head is starting to engage also. Thought it would never start.....plus just a bit ago I started losing my plug. Have faith and lots of sex!! we think thats what helped start things here. GL
  • Start inserting an evening primrose oil geltab into your vagina every night before bed. It will help soften the cervix. My midwife said she could tell a difference. Also, start drinking a couple cups of red raspberry leaf tea a day. It causes contractions (like Braxton Hicks) and that helps to dilate and loosen the cervix as well.

  • I'm 40 wks and 3 days, and have been fingertip dilated for over 4 weeks with no progression whatsoever, I'm scheduled to go into the hospital on thursday night and they will give me cervadil and then start pitocin on friday morning so we'll see how it works out for me.  I've been saying since 1st tri that I was going to be overdue and induced on 7/9 and that it will probably end in a c-section so we'll see... most of that prediction has come true so far but I'm still hoping that I avoid the c.  I'll post once I'm back from the hospital :)
  • I went to the dr., then for the final ultrasound the day my water broke. I had no progression at all until labor started.

A friend of mine just had a pretty difficult delivery. She started out with contractions, but wasn't dilating at all. The Dr gave her a cervidil insert without progress. Thy followed that up with a "balloon" procedure and she warned me decline that at all costs if I'm ever in the same position. She said it entails insertion of a tube into the cervix that manually dilates the cervix. It sounds pretty barbaric. I've never heard of it before, but just figured I'd give you a heads up in case any of your medical personnel mentions it.

  • Like other people mentioned, they can give you Cervidil (or Cytotec, which is originally designed as an ulcer medicine, I guess, but also works for dilating the cervix).  Having this type of induction does not mean you will HAVE to have Pitocin--I had Cytotec first and then Cervidil and by the end of the Cervadil, things were moving.  I was having contractions before that, they just apparently weren't that effective.  Relax and don't worry about it quite yet if you can help it.
