Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What would you do?

LO (15 months old) had the MMR vaccine last Tuesday.  At that time she had not really eaten much in 2 days.  I mention this to the Dr.  He says no big deal and gives her the shot.  Next morning she has throw up in her crib.  Every morning since she has had throw up in her crib.  Since Thursday she has been throwing up during the day, pooping like crazy and is barely keeping anything down.  I call Pedi on Friday and the nurse tells me a stomach virus is going around.  Now LO is lethargic (she is a very active little girl), still throwing up, still having diarreah and taking minimal liquids and eating bread.

DH and I dont know what to do and of course its Sunday of 4th of July with no pedi.  Anyone else had this experience with MMR... if it was a stomach virus its almost been a week and neither DH or I have it.  DH says wait till tomorrow to call Dr. - I on the other hand am freaking out.

Re: What would you do?

  • I'd call the doctor since she is lethargic. MMR reactions usually take a week to show up so I don't think that's what it is. Hope LO is better soon.

  • I would be freaking out too!  Is she interested in popsicles (just another way to get fluids in)?  Is there an after hours/nurse line you can call?

     Hope she feels better soon!

  • Wet diapers or no? I would worry about dehydration. my friends kid had something like that for 4 days. She got worried because there were few wet diapers and brought him to the hospital. He needed IV.  If your LO isn't peeing and lethargic, personally I would go to the ER. Dehydration happens fast with stomach bugs.
  • i would give pedialyte (sp) or anything. honestly, i gave ds gatorade (watered down) when he wouldn't drink and was vomiting and diarreah. he loved it LOL

hope all works out! what about watermelon or a fruit with alot of water in it?

  • I wouldn't care what the freaking nurse said!!  You know your own child better than anyone else.  I'd be freaking out too.  If it were me, I'd be taking my child to urgent care right now.
  • I would call your doctor/emergency no and get her checked out.  My DS developed a high temp a few hours after the MMR.  I called and asked if it was normal and was told by the nurse it was.  Two days later he still had a high temp (40 degrees) despite being given  kids paracetamol every four hours and he was lethargic. He would not drink water but the only thing he would eat were strawberries from the refridgerator.  I took him to the out of hours service as he wasn't getting any better - it turned out to be an ear infection completely unrelated to the MMR but he had to take a course of strong antibiotics to get rid of it.  The doc said that MMR reactions tend to occur one week later.
  • I don't think it's a reaction to the MMR. Hopefully the virus will go away soon. Will she take a popsicle?
