Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Logan keeps losing weight.

I'm so frustrated and saddened by Logan's weight loss.  He is 5 days old today and has lost 11% of his body weight.  He was 8 lbs 15 ozs when he was born and was now done to 7 lbs 15 ozs.

I have been nursing and supplementing by the doctors orders to plump him up but despite my effort he still lost weight from yesterday.  He is just so darn tired that it is near impossible to wake him up.  He is always sleeping and gets sleepy while nursing.

Now I have to pump so I know exactly how much he is taking in and top him off with formula.  I have him taking about 2-2.5 ozs of breastmilk in a bottle, but can't get anymore in him.

We have another appointment at the hospital tomorrow to see how much he weighs now.  I'm really contemplating stopping breast feeding.  It's so hard to pump  and feed him with a bottle while trying to keep my toddler busy.  I am completely torn...I don't know if I should give up already but it would be so much easier.

Is he throwing up?  He may have reflux or an allergy.  LO kept losing weight; we finally got him to his birth weight at 3 weeks old.  Turns out he has AR and is allergic to cow's milk protein and possibly soy.  He's doing much better now that he's on Zantac and I'm dairy and soy free.  GL, I hope you figure it out soon!!

  • Have you tried stripping him down and changing his diaper half way through a feeding?  Aiden always gives up and passes out half way through and this is the only way to perk him back up.  GL!

  • Don't be discouraged! With ds my milk didn't even come in until day 5, let alone get 2-3 oz! You are doing great! It just takes some babies a little longer to get back to their birth weight. If you have to supplement for a couple days it's no biggie, just keep pumping and attempting to nurse before giving the formula. The first few weeks are the hardest so hang in there :)

  • Is 2-2.5 oz not enough?  That's what DD took until she was a month old!  I understand your frustration though.  My milk came in way late, DD lost 16% of her BW by day 5, and we supplemented 4-5 days.  I could only pump 0.5 oz!  It was torture getting her to eat, she was so jaundiced, but after an IV for dehydration she seemed to "wake up".  I think it flushed the bilirubin out faster.
