REALLY stupid co-sleeping question

We have been co-sleeping and/or bed sharing since the day Henry was born. We have always been very careful and vigilant as to how we were sleeping and how he was sleeping, but my husband used to worry about his suffocating at night all the time.

Now that he's 8 months old, 20lbs, and SUPER mobile is there less concern?

  • I would guess yes...especially if he's able to roll over and get on all fours and stuff. The real risk from something like SIDS is mostly in the first 6 months. Now you just have to worry about them falling off the bed [unless you have bedrails or something, or DS sleeps between you]. I think as long as you're still avoiding things like smoking and going to bed under the influence of alcohol, you wouldn't have to worry as much =)

  • Like pp said...  The risk of SIDS drops significantly at 6 months.  It is close to zero by 1 year.

Suffocation/smothering is different though.  SIDS is unknown cause of death.  Smothering is a known cause of death.  I would guess that is still a risk at any age, though less as baby gets bigger and more mobile.

  • Yeah, there's less concern. The new concern, however, is baby crawling off the bed! That's a fun one. We ended up putting our mattress on the floor.

  • Yes, but SIDS is still a risk factor for the entire first year. We had a relative who lost her baby to SIDS when he was 7 months old. I would much rather be safe than sorry.
