Pregnant after a Loss

Dumb question from a TTCALer

Hey ladies! I know one of you will be able to answer my dumb question. With my first pg, it was a surprise and I really didn't know much about what was going on with my first apt. When I had bloodwork, they only told me my HCG levels, which were doubling at the time and normal as far as what they would tell me. I don't know if they tested progesterone. They never told me. Do they normally test both or do you have to have a reason for them to test progesterone? After the m/c I am so paranoid about hormone levels, and I was wondering if my progesterone had been low the first time if they would have told me. TIA!

Re: Dumb question from a TTCALer

  • I'm a bit of a newbie myself but they didn't test mine the first time either. They only tested it when I started spotting and miscarrying. I had to ask for them to really investigate it further and do a CD21 test. This time they did HCG and progesterone because of the loss. HTH! Good luck!!

  • My progesterone was tested the second time around with my beta (by the RE)... thank God it was because it was dropping.

  • If your nervous I would ask for them to check it no matter what.  After what has happened this week I wish I got BW done from the begining. I hope we caught it in time but I would have been nice to know almost a month ago about my progesterone.   GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE TO SEE YOU HERE SOON!

  • I don't think every office tests HCG and progesterone automatically. For instance, my OB won't take my HCG levels but WILL test my progesterone (which was low, btw and I'm on supplements). Apparently, they believe if HCG isn't doubling or whatever properly, there is nothing they can do, but if progesterone is low, they can help that. Whenever you get pregnant again, I would tell your OB you have a prior miscarriage and INSIST that they draw progesterone as well. It can't hurt!

  • I didn't have any tests at all with my first PG other than the urine test. I had to request beta/progesterone levels for my second.  It isn't really something they do for all pregnancies.
