Flying long haul in 1st Trimester- WWYD?

Hi~ I used to post on the Houston Nest board a while ago and moved to a different state with a slower board.  If you don't mind, I'd love to get some opinions as I recognize lots of screen names...

DH and I planned a month-long trip in Aug that requires 5 flights TO and 5 flights FROM our final destination.  We've done this trip before as we are visiting family, so nothing new but it is a tiring journey with 1 or both of us getting sick at some point.  With nearly every flight (even short domestic ones), I always have some air travel queasiness that requires Bonine.

I'll be 9 weeks when we leave and I don't have any medical reason that makes it unsafe for me to fly.  I haven't had any M/S yet, but it's still early.  I started B6 in addition to prenatals to help ward off M/S hopefully, but I'm at a loss as to whether this trip is a good idea from the potential queasiness and/or tiredness standpoint.

WWYD?

Re: Flying long haul in 1st Trimester- WWYD?

  • Hello and congrats lady!!!!!!!

I traveled a lot during my first two trimesters but it was all in the states and less than a 4 hour flight but those travel days kicked my arse. Especially during the 1st tri when I went to bed at 8:30 every night. I had some serious exhaustion so I personally couldn't have managed 5 flights there and back. Only you will know what you can tolerate. Me, I wouldn't do it, but it can be done.

  • I don't have any advice other than to say to check with your doctor as well to see what they think and/or can offer.

So glad to see you here! Congratulations!!

  • CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited for you guys!!! I don't have any advice but glad you remembered your old friends down in Htown :D

  • Congrats!! And I would still go, even though it will kick your butt.  Being able to share the news with your family in person would make up for it (IMO.)

I'd stock up on Unisom.  Half a unisom and B6 every night kept my m/s under control with Marion.  I'd also go on and ask your doc for a prescription for Zofran, just in case.  Also, find out what you can and can't take for tummy bugs and whatever else you're prone to getting on the trip so you can be prepared.

It will be exhausting but try as much as possible to just sleep on the flights and get pampered when you're with family.

Thanks!  It's wonderful to see the new kiddos and tickers around here!! :-)

I appreciate the input!  The idea of sharing this time with family is exactly what is pushing me towards suffering through the flights and going.  They're all really excited about the news.

  • I remember you!  You lived in Brooklyn for a while, right?  Either you or your DH was a medical intern?

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!

  • Congrats!  I would go...but I felt great in my 1st trimester.  I had quite a bit of energy, no m/s, nothing.  I would imagine you'll be tired, but if you don't go you will probably miss the opportunity to go for a while - esp after you have the baby.
  • Hey!! Congrats!! So good to "see" you again! I don't have much advice either. But I felt really nauseous my first trimester and we cancelled a week long vacation because I was too sick to travel. I personally wouldn't go on such a long trip during the first trimester. I felt great my second trimester and would have been up for it!

that's me- good memory!  we moved to the midwest after that and DH is starting his last year of residency :)

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice, y'all!  After talking more about it, now I'm pushing more towards going and DH is pushing the other way. Haha!  I guess we'll need to decide soon!

  • Hi Congrats!!!!

Like others I think I'd go.  You'll take care of yourself and I'm sure your husband will take extra special care of you so enjoy it.
