If you've had thrush come in...

I took DD to pedi today and she has it, pedi asked me if i'm having any pain or discomfort when BFing. I told her I was nipples were sore and sharp pains in both breast. She perscribed me some cream for nipples and DD something. I have been reading different things about thrush and if your having sharp pains you will need more than a cream.  Is this true?  What has anyone else takin for thrush? Also what about taking a probiotic? would this help at all? Thanks!!!

I took DD to the pedi this week for thrush.  She was prescribed something but I wasn't.  I was wondering if I would, but I didn't get anything.  LO takes 1/2 tsp of Nystatin 4 times a day.

I wonder if I should be taking something as well.  My nipples still hurt!

  • HI there....i was having the same pains- after breastfeeding is when I noticed it the most. I just finished a course of diflucan ( was on for 10 days) and knock on wood have not had the pains anymore. They were really bad one morning- to the point that I had tears in my eyes! I feel your pain. Ask them about a prescription antibiotic.
  • We had thrush last week, my nipples were red and burned during and Fter feedings, very sore and tender too. The LC had us use an antiseptic called gentian violet. I put it in DS mouth and on my nipples once a day for 3 days and it worked like a charm, we had relief after the first treatment. I'm surprised they don't use this befor prescription drugs, my bottle was like $2. It was messy though (it's bright purple staining stuff).

  • I had thrush from the beginning.  LO did not have any signs.  The dr refused to give me Diflucan since I was breastfeeding, and he only gave me Nystatin to put on the nipples.  It didn't work.  He also refused to give my anything for LO as she had no symptoms.  My midwives suggested that I take grapefruit seed extract and acidophilus.  I did that for about a month, and I think it's pretty much gone now. It's a bugger to get rid of.  I've heard of some people taking Diflucan and that not even helping. I was told that you should sterilize anything that comes in contact with your nipple (pump parts, washing bras on hot to kill the yeast)  I never did this, but it might help.

Oh yeah, I forgot about gentian violet!  This is supposed to work really well.  I had asked my midwives about it, but they recommend it if LO has thrush as well, which she didn't.  I friend of mine used this and it cleared it up quickly.
