Another carrier question :-) (trying on ergo and ergo vs. babyhawk)

So, despite the fact that I have a Babyhawk that I really like (plus an unused Bjorn, a hotsling, and a ring sling that intimidates me), I feel like I want an Ergo.  I missed the babyseals deal last week (grrrr), but I have $100 of Christmas money still sitting around that I might decide to spend on an Ergo.

DH thinks I'm crazy.  My reasons for wanting an Ergo are that (1) I think it'll be easier to get on and off (I almost never use the Babyhawk out of the house anymore because it takes some time to tie on plus the straps drag all over the ground) and (2) I think the Ergo will be more supportive than the Babyhawk (and therefore more comfortable for me).

Am I right?  Or would the Ergo just be kind of the same thing?  I tried telling DH that the Babyhawk was better for tiny infants whereas the Ergo was better for toddlers.  Am I way off base?  Also, does the baby sit lower in an Ergo?  In the Babyhawk, DD rides pretty high on my back and can see a lot.

Also -- there's a store in town where I can go try the Ergo on to see if I like it.  If I drive an hour away, I can go to a store and try on the Ergo, Beco, and probably a few other ones as well.  Will I regret not trying out the Beco?  I'm tall, and I've heard that shorter moms tend to like the Beco better.  The only reason I think I might like the Beco better is that they're prettier :-)

So, what do you ladies think?  Thanks!!

  • I have a BabyHawk and IMO it is better suited for older babies and toddlers. We didn't get ours until DS was older than 6 months and DH still uses it with him now.

  • I have both a mei tai and an Ergo and it has been nice to have both options.  I use the MT mainly for hip carries when running in and out of stores.  As you noted it takes a bit longer to tie on and DS isn't as patient.  The Ergo is my go-to for longer trips out and I love it for back carries.  I would make the drive and try on a couple SSC and see if one feels better and see how your LO likes them and then make the decision.

  • I just got my Ergo ( I pounced on the Babysteals deal last week) so I've only used it a few times, and I LOVE it. I thought I really liked my mei tai until I tried the ergo and realized how much more comfortable it is than the mei tai. I'll probably keep the mei tai around because I can see how it'd be better suited for a smaller baby (and we want more kids down the road), but for an older one I really think the Ergo is the way to go.
