Can't Have Anything Nice (Vent)

Last week Monday we had carpet installed in the nursery and master bedroom. The nursery we have been keeping closed off because we have a cat and we don't want him in the nursery.

Anyways, yesterday afternoon a neighbor was over while I was at work and DH showed her the progress on the nursery and unintentionally locked the cat in there. For seven hours.

Now I'm excited to say (notice the sarcasm) that the nursery, that we've been trying so hard to keep cat-proof, has been pissed in.

Just goes to show that I can't have anything nice. I don't even know why I try.

  • Eww yuck, cat pee has such a strong odor. Make DH clean it up! Do you have a carpet cleaner?

  • He did clean it up as soon as he figured out Felix had been locked in there. You're right, it does have a strong odor. I'm just really upset about it. I know it was a mistake, but I couldn't even look at either one of them last night. haha. Pregnancy hormones strike again...

  • Sorry to hear about your cat. Good intentions gone awry :)

Our dog is fully house-trained so that's not a problem. But she makes messes wherever she goes (muddy paws, what have you). For this reason, I tried to keep her out of the nursery since we shampooed the carpet a few weeks ago. But we've left the door open, because wasn't really going in there at all. But yesterday I went in there and found two bones and a tennis ball that had been buried outside, dug up, and casually placed under the baby's crib...disgusting and mud-caked. She also had dragged a few dirty pairs of my husband's socks in there. Don't know how long she's been working on that "project." Her form of nesting, I guess. Grr...pets!

  • if you think that is bad- just wait until you have a toddler (let alone 2 of them)- you will NEVER have anything nice again- for years and years to come.

  • I'm really sorry that happened. I would be VERY upset too. But PP is right that if you think your pets can ruin nice things for you - you are in for some fun with a kid...

We just assume/plan that we need to make kid friendly choices (no top of the line granite/hardwood/leather)  in our home projects until we are done with little people. So we do microfiber sofas, laminate floors and laminate counters for the next 10 years... Not quite as pretty but less stressful living with small children and fewer tears if something does still manage to get ruined..

We don't have any pets but spills and pee (toddlers) and whatever else might get in carpets (dust/allergens, etc) are among the reasons I refuse to put carpet in any rooms we replace flooring in... So far all the carpet and cracked tiles we've ripped up have been replaced with laminate wood and it looks tons better and cleans SOOOO easy. Would hardwood look better - of course - when it was new. But my kids drag crap across the floors I would never have imagined (which would scratch hardwoods), they get crayon on them, they spill red kool-aid, they've peed on them on occasion..they are - kids. And my floors still look awesome.

Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a tangent..Just sharing what we've learned since we have a nearly 4 year old, nearly 2 year old and soon to have an infant... Maybe this will help someone who hasn't yet made their home improvement selections...

  • Oh, I have no illusions that my girls will be mess-free, but they're not due to make their appearance for another couple of months. I thought I had at least that long to enjoy the their nursery being nice and pristine.

PP, we had partially moved in the laminate floor direction. We put it in our laundry room when we remodeled this spring. After our well pump sprung a leak three weeks ago and flooded the whole room under the floating floor we had to rip it out and replace it with tile. Maybe I should just give up on new flooring in my house. Haha.
