Babies: 0 - 3 Months

do you ever wake LO to eat?

DD has always been a good eater (EBF)...usually is hungry about every 2 hrs, sometime sooner.

Do you ever wake up LO to eat?  When we went to the Pedi at 2 wks, he said not to let her go more than 5 hours at night.  We have never had to wake her up, she hasnt gone that long yet.Just curious at this point (5.5 wks) is that still the case?

How about during the day? I dont want her napping that long, trying to get her long stretches of sleep to be at night.  if she is sleeping and its been 4 hours since we have eaten, i have been waking her.....

Re: do you ever wake LO to eat?

  • DS went 6hrs last night (1m today).  Once it's clear weight gain is going well, I never wake.

  • Before she turned one month old, we used to wake DD to eat especially if she went longer than 5 hours between feedings.  But after her one month appt., my pedi said that we should just let her sleep - day or night.

  • Our pedi said that as long as LO is gaining weight I dont need to wake him up to eat. So the only time I do is if I know he will need to BF before we go somewhere.
  • I woke him for the first 2 weeks and after his doctor visits he had been gaining more than enough weight ...I stopped waking him and he usually will wake up every 4 hours and eat 4 oz but he has gone about 5 1/2 hours a couple of times and woke up on his own to eat.  I would check with your pedi to be sure that is ok though! Hope this helps :)

My LO is the same age as yours, and I only wake her during the day if she goes longer than 3 hours(which almost never happens). I never wake her at night, but in general she wakes on her own after 4-5 hours. Though she has slept for longer stretches, usually after she's been up a long time during the day and is overtired.

  • My pedi also said to not let LO go over 5 hours so he doesn't miss a feeding. I wake him if he's pushing 5 hours. When he gets a little older, I won't wake him.
  • i don't wake him at night but if he goes 4+ hours during the day i wake him.

  • When he sleeps that long, I don't wake him. He has been gaining weight very well though.

  • I don't wake her up at night. She has surpassed her birth weight, so the doctor says to let her sleep as long as she will. I think 7.5 hours is the most she has gone, usually it is around 5 hours.

During the day, I try to keep her to 3-4 hours between feedings. So, I do wake her up.

  • After she got back to her birth weight we did on-demand or we would wake her every 4 hours during the day and then 5 hours at night (doctor okayed this). At a doctor's appointment later that week she hadn't gained anymore weight so we went back to every 3 hours (and we usually have to wake her up).
  • i never wake at night. If she is hungry she will wake up to eat. I wake just to wake her up in the afternoon so she sleeps good at night.

  • Once they get back to their birth weight you shouldn't have to wake them. DS was back at his within a week but he never went long enough for me to have to wake him anyway.

  • I have two daughters (3 and 4 now) but when they were younger I never woke them to eat. My thinking is if they are hungry they let you know and if they are tired and want more sleep one night or to start doing it from then on out why not let them? Both of them are happy healthy beautiful little girls.

And with the baby that is in the making right now I will do the same thing. I am going to try to BF but it may just be pumping the entire time but I wont be waking any LO up if they are sleeping!

  • Enjoy that precious sleep!! Ours was also EBF, and she started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks and everyone told me I should wake her up to eat.  I spoke with the Dr, and they agreed: Like everyone else said, as long as they're gaining weight, let them be!  In my experience, babies that nurse on demand will let you know when they're hungry again!

  • I've only woken DD once; she'd been asleep about 5 hours and I was getting nervous. But usually she's the one who lets me know when she's hungry.

  • My pediatrician said the first month to wake our son every 2 hours to eat, so I set the alarm for every 2 hours and thought i was going to go crazy. After that month was over and our son was packing on the weight I let him wake on his own. He is 5 1/2 months now and usually sleeps several hours a night, but most of the time in the day he still wants to be on that newborn schedule and eats every 2-3 hours. Best of luck
