Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Anyone have one?  what is the best one to get?  I have stupidly left the stove on for a long time (on simmer) recently and of course I never smelled it.  DH did when he came home from work after it being on for many hours.  We aired out our house but I feel so guilty that something actually could have happened to any of us.  Stupid stupid me!

Re: Carbon Monoxide Alarms

  • We have one from Home Depot, not sure the brand name, but it talks to you and gives you the reading and will say EVACUATE if it's at a certain level.  Ours is in the hallway, in between the bedrooms and the kitchen.  It even does a test (we treat it as the Fire Drill & really evacuate) every 4-6 months or so.  Also says something about "Batteries are Low" if they are.  Crazy strange, but useful.

DC has one in his room as well, Smoke/CM, but it doesn't talk, just alarm.

We have a plug in one for the garage, and even with the hot rod have never set it off.

  • We do, they are so important to have!

I am not sure of the brand, we got them at either Lowes or Home Depot and they plug into the wall.  We have one downstairs and one upstairs.

  • Ugh, that reminds me we need to get one! We had one in our old house but left it there when we moved. I don't remember the brand, we got it from Sears. I don't think any of them would detect your stove being left on, natural gas is different than carbon monoxide. But, I've totally done that with a gas stove myself. Sucks when you realize what you've done!

I left the stove on for over 6 hours....I'd hope it would detect it after that long.  DH came home at 1am from work...I cooked at 6pm.

This is why I call myself stupid!!

  • We also got ours from Home Depot and it plugs in the wall.  I love that we never have to worry about changing the batteries.

  • We had the firefighters come over a few weeks ago for a fire safety inspection (and a thrill for my boys!) and they recommended we get one.  I think they said every room with a smoke detector should have one too.  Then, we received an invitation to a fundraiser to raise awareness about the dangers of CO.  I didn't recognize the name, but DH did.  One of the girls he went to HS with lost her 3 year old son a few months ago due to CO poisoning, and they didn't have a detector.  :-(

So, we finally bought one!  We got it from Lowe's, and there weren't a whole lot of options.  We bought two of the ones that plug into the wall, and also have a batter back up.  There were two other options - one that was battery only, and another that plugged into the wall but also gives a digital reading of the CO level.  All of the ones at Lowe's were the same brand.
