Babies: 6 - 9 Months

BLW - broccoli as first food?

we're getting to start feeding our girl solids, and we're going to do baby-led weaning.  we're thinking of starting with pear, broccoli, and/or cucumber.  any other good suggestions for first foods?

Re: BLW - broccoli as first food?

  • We are not going to give DS broccoli for a little bit.  It gives me horrible gas and my little one has my internals.   DS is already gassy so DH is begging to hold off on broccoli...

  • I agree that broccoli is gassy.

  • I don't think broccoli would be a good first food. Infact I think I read to hold off until 8-10 months.

  • We're also holding off on broccoli due to the gas factor. I know I've read a few places that it's the perfect food for BLW because of the stalk "handle"  but other sources say to wait.

We started with avacado (also doing BLW)

GL!  and the site I linked above has fantastic info on which foods to use when.

  • Broccoli and cucumber are both gassy foods. I would recommend starting with the orange veggies like squash, carrots, sweet taters...then moving into the greens, then into fruits.

Broccoli was one of my daughter's first foods. We also do BLW, and it was recommended in the book I read on it. It's good because they have something to hold on to. I just steamed it really well so it was really soft. She loved it and we didn't have any problems with gas. Some of her other first foods were pears, bananas, and sweet potato wedges. We love BLW. I started off trying to do purees and she hated it. I love having her sit at the table and explore eating while we have dinner. So much more enjoyable.

  • I think when you think about the gas factor, people are thinking about the baby actually eating a lot of it, like if you were to puree it and spoon feed it.  A baby just starting BLW is going to get very little in (maybe just a few little pieces of the tree part, and that won't even be intentional).  We gave it to DD with no problems, though she doesn't particularly care for it unless we dip it in plain yogurt.  I say go for it.

    Other good foods to start:

Melon with rind on (watermelon, cantaloupe)

Hummus (you can dip the broccoli in this so LO can suck it off)

    Yogurt

    Beans

    Grilled zucchini and yellow squash

    Steamed asparagus

Hunks of grilled chicken to chew on

    BTW, we love BLW!

  • Broccoli is an excellent BLW first food.  Leave it with it's stalk as the handle.

  • Thanks everyone! We'll see what looks good at the farmer's market tomorrow and start her on that.
