Tummy Sleeping???

I know this is not recommended, but DS slept so much better this way this morning for his nap.   Does anyone have a child who sleeps better on their tummy?  I am so scared to put him on his tummy at night though when I can't watch him.  Will he get used to sleeping on his back.  Any help is appreciated.

Re: Tummy Sleeping???

  • DS has slept on his tummy since he was 2 weeks old.  I was also really worried about it, but felt much better after talking to his pedi about it.  She said that it was fine as long as he was in his crib or pnp and didn't have blankets in there with him.  He is now 7 months old and still sleeps on his tummy.

  • DS has slept on his tummy since he could roll over (about 3 weeks ago).  I felt comfortable since he has good head/neck control and can roll over as well...

  • I usually try her on her back first but if she keeps startling, the tummy sleeping seems to help.  She has great head control so I'm not *too* worried.  I do wish I had a video monitor though!

  • DD has been sleeping on her tummy since we stopped swaddling her at 3 months. The only way she'll sleep on her back is if she's either elevated (like in the swing or car seat) or if she's in our bed and someone is sleeping next to her. Otherwise she never stops kicking long enough to fall asleep, so tummy it is.
  • I put DS down to sleep on his back and he automatically rolls to his side.  Before I know it he's on his tummy.  My pedi said that once he starts rolling onto his tummy and sleeping that way that there is not much that I could do about it.  He's been sleeping on his tummy since he was 3 months old and it wasn't by my choice!

  • As soon as DS could roll over and dictate his sleep position he was on his belly. He sleeps like a rock. I was really nervous at first but if they can roll well then they say they're safe. There is a breathing monitor you can buy if you are really worried but you still want him on his tum. What about side sleeping with a wedge? DS like that much better then back sleeping and it's a little safer.
  • Many babies sleep better on their tummies. My DD has been a tummy sleeper since 5 weeks old. She was miserable on her back (reflux) and I finally gave in so that we could all get some sleep. She is rolling now and has been for several months, so she puts herself in that position now. We also bought the AngelCare monitor for some peace of mind.

  • We let DS nap on his belly when we can watch him...
  • My DS has been a tummy sleeper since 7 weeks.  Sleeping on his back was NOT working. I've gottne much more comfortable now that he has good head control.  I put him dwn with no blankets and make sure that his head is turned to one side or the other.

I admit, if I don't hear him moving on the monitor for a while (I'm a light sleeper), I will peak in there to make sure everything is okay.
