Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Any 9-12 month olds still take a third nap?

If so, has it always been there or did you recently have to introduce it? What time is it at and when does it end?
I'm asking because my 9 month old is getting EXTREMELY fussy at around 5pm every day and won't really be consoled with eating, drinking, playing, etc... She has never really had a third nap, but now I'm starting to think she may need it suddenly?
What do you think?
TIA!

Re: Any 9-12 month olds still take a third nap?

  • She's had a third nap pretty much as long as I've had her on a schedule.  Her third nap is usually between 3-4 pm and only lasts a 1/2 hour to an hour.

It's her shortest nap and sometimes she doesn't need it, so I think she may be getting ready to drop it soon.

I would try it and see if it works for your LO.

  • Most days, yes we have a third nap. Her first is usually 930-1030, her second is usually 1-2 and her third is 430-5.

Today was an exception though, she napped 10-11 and then 230-5. MUCH better if you ask me, but I don't mind her usual 3 catnap days.

Yes, he usually does...  but it's only because he doesn't nap for longer than 30 minutes at a time. Some nights we get away with not doing it... but 75% of the time he takes it. We used to do 4 naps a day. Depending on how long she's sleeping during the day, I might try it... if it doesn't mess up bedtime, I'd go with it. Or maybe you need to move bedtime earlier?

This. That third nap is a great time to start dinner.

  • Sometimes.  It depends on how the earlier naps fall and how long she sleeps.  If she takes one it is around 5 and is about 1/2 an hour.
  • DD still takes 3 naps pretty frequently.  She is really easy-going, though, so she isn't on a real consistant schedule. Depending on the day, she will take one, two or three naps.  On three nap days, she is up around 8:00, naps from 10:00 until 11:30 or so, again at about 1:30 for an hour or two and then again at five or six.  She goes to bed between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m., depending on the day and how wild she is feeling.
  • DS always takes 3 or 4 naps a day, usually 4.  He wakes up at 6 or 6:30 and goes down for his first nap between 8 & 9 a.m. and takes his final nap of the day anytime between 4 & 5:30 p.m. and that final nap never affects his bedtime which is between 7 & 8 p.m.  If he misses his final nap then I put him to bed early.  Basically he goes down for a nap every 2 hours just like the Weissbluth book says.  I didn't force that schedule on him, he just gets tired and cranky and yawns and rubs his eyes every 2 hours.

  • Could you keep her up longer between naps which would push her 2nd nap back?  H usually takes 2 naps and his last one will end around 3:30.  He is in bed by 6:30 on most nights.

Maybe pushing back her 2nd nap and putting her down earlier will help.
