So, we are looking to move to the Eastside within the next year - closer to work (in Redmond), hoping to get a bigger house with more of a yard, and ideally be situated for a great school district.
I grew up in Bothell, so I'm very familiar with the area geographically - but out of touch on recent stats or opinions. We are thinking of anywhere from Issaquah / Belleuve / Redmond / Woodinville...or heck, even Duvall if we found the right house.
I know Bellevue has the highest rated schools locally - and that Redmond has done a lot of renovating of their district. I've looked at www.greatschools.com but it's hard to know where to start....
Re: Recommend your Eastside 'hood and/or school district
I'm not sure you can really go wrong in any of those areas. I mean maybe one school is a little better or more renovated or something than another, but in 5 years when you're starting - or 13 for high school - those small advantages will flip flop several times... The areas you mention all have voter populations that tend to vote in school $$, so that's good too...
I'm a Duvall native, the schools are what you make of them. For what it's worth, I worked my tail off to get a scholarship to boarding school so I could attend a more challenging high school. The school district isn't horrible, it just wasn't what I wanted. Neighborhood wise, it is a great city.
We live in Woodinville now, great for both our commutes, the school district is wonderful, and we like our neighbors. We're in unincorporated Woodinville - better house prices, more land, and closer to where we wanted to be. We love it, and plan to stay in the general area and hopefully upgrade to a bigger house in five or six years that's close by.
Bellevue, North Shore and Lake Wash all rank really well on Great Schools (but check the exact school for a house since there can be bad apples still in the mix...some rated surprisingly low). We really liked the Woodinville, Kirkland and Redmond neighborhoods...but hated the old feel of East Bellevue where we could afford the house prices.
We ended up buying on Education Hill in Redmond and love it! (demand for houses seems high for resale)...but also looked closely around English Hill and Finn Hill.
I went to both Bellevue high and LW high school. Bellevue public schools are great but I always lean a bit more towards LWSD, because I would never want to send my child to bellevue high. Teachers there will pass football players to keep them playing on the team and it is very snooty. No joke go drive up around campus and check out the cars the teens there are driving! LW high school is a great school and will be brand new next year. LW had lots of school spirit and all the kids meshed well together. Teachers were fantastic! I think that all the elementary schools and junior highs in the bellevue lwsd are all pretty top quality. I've heard that Juantia highschool is really lacking these days and of course the big drug busts at redmond high school last year but by the time your kids will be in high school things will probably change quite a bit.
I thought I would ad I LOVE our Robinswood area! We have incredible parks! One of which is behind our house, the neighborhood is quiet but people are friendly. Our elementary school(spiritridge) will be 2 years old when Cruz starts school, and the junior high is within walking distance! Most of the houses around us are slowly but surely being renovated and remodeled or knocked down and rebuilt. I love that I-90 is 2 seconds away and its really close to factoria or crossroads and only about 8 min to downtown bellevue!
Yeah, I went to Juanita...sounds the same as Bellevue High...yuck. You didn't exist if you weren't on a sports team...
I like the Education Hill area (love the schools - my friend taught at the El) and Robinswood sounds great! I used to live on Samm Plateau and love the area but the commute down to Redmond sucks. I wonder if it's improved in the last 5 years?
I love knowing these little pocket neighborhoods. Mercer Island is great but we could never afford it for the yard we want. We really need to drive around too...Please, keep 'em coming!
yeah it has. They made a lot of improvements to 202 between the Gray Barn and that big intersection where the Whole Foods is.
