*~*~MSPI Moms Weekly Check In*~*~ 4/6

Hi all! Sorry this is late. I'm in the field all week so I'll be brief. How are you and LO doing? Any questions or experiences to share? Hope everyone is doing well!

Re: *~*~MSPI Moms Weekly Check In*~*~ 4/6

  • I continued my slow experimentation this weekend and I think we hit a wall.

DS has very gassy and seemed to have a pretty upset tummy this morning. He had been gassy most of last week, but I didn't think it was necessarily dairy-related bc the timing didn't really seem to line up. I thought it might have been an issue with solids. So I don't know, but it's better to be safe than sorry. We'll see if his gassiness/discomfort get better throughout the week and take this weekend off from the experimentation.

But he doesn't react to goat cheese, so I'll just hold on to that!

We are going to visit our families over Easter, which is exciting, but the no-dairy issue was a real hassle over Christmas. Ugh.

  • We are back to full MSPI. The allergist recommended that I slowly reintroduce dairy and soy (among the other foods he tested positive for having an allergy), and dairy was a fail. I hadn't even tried soy, and I'm hesitant to do so.

On the upside, he is fine with wheat, which did open up a lot more things to eat for us.

  • Hey all! We are only off dairy and things are going great!! I feel like I have a completely different child. The diet is getting much easier to navigate as well.

I also just wanted to say you guys have been amazing!!!!

  • Still dairy, soy, nut, and beef free. I've been avoiding wheat lately but not sure if that's helping at all. There is still mucous and lately dark green sprinkled in. Maybe this is our normal though..

I did bring eggs back this week and so far, there has been no change. So, now oatmeal may not be my only breakfast option! It's still early though but she reacted to beef pretty fast so I think we may have a keeper! :D

  • We are still struggling a bit. I've been dairy and soy free for over 4 months, tree nut and peanut free for 2 months. I cut out soybean oil 2 weeks ago and soy lecithin 1 week ago. I know it can take time to clear my system, but it's frustrating that we still haven't figured it out. DD will have 1-2 week periods of normal poops, then back to green mucous with no change in my diet.

I keep seeing people mention cutting beef, never thought about it, but maybe I should try that? I don't eat tons of beef, but it may be worth a shot. My next thoughts were wheat and egg but I'm trying to give the soy lecithin/soybean oil elimination a full trial.

  • Hello. I've been dairy and soy free for just over 2 weeks now. I've had no problems with the dietary restrictions but I'm struggling not to feel discouraged/worried that I haven't seen any change in my daughter's primary symptom - slimey poop. I know that it can take up to four weeks but I had read so many accounts of people seeing improvements in 2 weeks or less that I expected something similar. I am trying to stay positive (everything else points to a happy, healthy 10 week old) while we wait. If no improvements at 4 weeks I'll be calling her doctor.

Hi! This is my first MSPI check-in as I found out yesterday it looks like LO has a dairy aversion (she has had explosive poops, mucuos and blood in them the last couple of weeks). A brief intro as well since I have not been very active on the breastfeeding board:

I have a nearly 9 week old LO-a sweet little girl and am exclusively BFing. I've never had to deal with any food allergies or aversions myself so I am nervous to start going dairy free today. I've gotten some great advice and suggestions on the board already from my post yesterday, but would love any additional--especially specific foods you like!! Looking for easy lunches to take to work and dinners especially. Here is one good link I've found so far I thought I'd share

  • @amichelle723‌ that is frustrating! You said you don't eat beef very often, I wonder if your LOs sudden poop changes might be correlated with beef? Otherwise I would probably cut wheat or egg next; the advice I was given by pedi and GE was to work through top 8 allergens. GL!
  • @caloneis Welcome! It is hard to wait to see results at first. Hang in there!
@MissusPearson‌ Welcome! look through our archives at mspimoms.blogspot.com - we talk a lot about food! Mspimama.com is a good resource too. GL!
  • We are almost 2 months in (eliminated all soy, milk and beef) and have seen a great improvement. We did have a major set back this week- I ate some smoked salmon (I was told there was nothing on it), later I was told it was brined. Next morning we had blood specks in the poop. I looked up the brine and found it was made with soy. I knew she was sensitive to soy, and serve had to cut soy lecithin and soybean oil as well. I've also had to cut all legumes, as they make her quite gassy.

When we were dx it was due to the blood in her poop, and the pedi said this was a classic with milk protein, I chose to cut out soy then too- but now I'm wondering if she's only soy? And not milk? Has anyone encountered just a soy allergy? How long will it take for soy to clear our system?

Other than our set back with soy, it's been going pretty well. We are on vacation in Florida, and it's been a bit sad not to hit some of the restaurants I love going to! But that's ok!
  • @rocknrollfriend That's why I was thinking it might be related- I only eat beef every few weeks and her symptoms fluctuate every few weeks...but even though I do keep a food diary I haven't been as good about logging DD's symptoms so unfortunately I can't look back and see if there is a correlation. Currently, I haven't had beef in 1 1/2 weeks, and she did have a very mucousy poop yesterday, so who knows. Looks like I'll be doing a trial without eggs or wheat next :(

Another question, does anyone have experience with probiotics? Either for yourself or LO? I was considering starting on one just to see if it helped, but I know a lot of them are cultured in dairy or soy. Any brand recommendations?

  • @MissusPearson I do a lot of grilled chicken and veggies, also tacos/taco salad with guacomole in place of cheese and sour cream. I made the avocado chicken salad recipe posted last week and it was pretty good in a pita. I also made a vegan avocado ranch dressing that was really good! It's going to be my new go-to creamy salad dressing. As PP mentioned MSPImama.com is great too.

  • We are both doing well. Four month checkup is next week.

I am dreading Easter because it is a potluck. I hope that LO is young enough that no one tries to feed him. I'm considering making him a shirt that says "Mama's milk only."

  • Arghh, so today I accidently ate an almond bar with dairy. My mom misread the label. Apparently she was so focused on looking for soy that she missed the BUTTER. I'm upset (at myself, never will something cross my lips again until I read the label) but nothing can be done about it now, so I will just have to move on. My question, how bad is it? Have I just set myself back 2 weeks?

As I mentioned above, no change in the poop yet. I'm not even sure how to describe it - diarrhea? It looks slimy and all over mucous-y (rather than strands of mucous) and not the seedy yellow she had for her first six weeks. Color is yellow to yellow-brown. As for acid reflux symptoms, it is hard for me to judge whether I've seen any improvements or am imagining things (fewer hiccups, less coughing and choking noises etc..). She has been napping a lot better the last few days. But it's not like she ever seemed uncomfortable during the daytime before.

I just want answers and I don't like waiting. But we will persevere, just need to vent some of the emotions, I guess.

@caloneis Well, it's not like you're starting from scratch - much of the dairy protein has probably worked it's way out of your systems by now, and you've only added a little back in (I think butter is one of the lower milk-protein dairy items since it's mostly fat). But I would probably allow a little more than 2 more weeks to see improvement in symptoms, just to be sure you're not cutting anything else out unnecessarily. I know how frustrating it is, but you're in good company! Most of us have had slip ups along the way, especially in the beginning. Keep at it and don't beat yourself up about it. :)
  • Hi everyone, I haven't checked in for quite awhile. Between work, out of town guests and then the stomach bug going around in my family it has been super hectic. Yesterday we saw DS' allergist. We asked if he could be tested for some of his allergies. He said that because his type of allergy is FPIES it wouldn't show up in a blood test. He even pulled up some info on it supposedly by the biggest expert in the field. I'm confused bcI know other moms IRL whose pediatricians did the tests and believed the results even though it was FPIES. Does anyone have any experience with this? TIA!

  • @brideinsummer04‌ Nice to see you! Sorry, I don't have any experience with FPIES. Have you checked in on the Food Allergy board? Maybe ask for a second opinion from another allergist?
@casey78‌ Welcome! That is a lot of allergies/restrictions to deal with! I would think you'd want to avoid anything that could have milk protein in it (so even hidden dairy), at least for now, and the other foods she's allergic to. I know allergies can be weird, and some people can tolerate certain small amounts of an allergen, but you'd probably want to figure that out pretty carefully. I'd also suggest checking in on te Food Allergy board if you haven't already. GL!
  • Late to post!  RSV hit our house, and I have been overwhelmed!
DD's rash went away so I assumed it was from the wheat I tried a couple of weeks ago...except it came back today.  I am not sure what to think.  I ate nothing that could have contained wheat.  The only take out I got this past week was a salad.
Other than that we are doing well!
