Formula dispensers

I read that having plastic container w/compartments to pre-measure formula is a must-have, particularly when you're out and about for the day.

But how is this different/more convenient than just pre-measuring the formula into empty bottles (and then adding water as needed?) My babies aren't here yet so I don't really comprehend logistics just yet . . .

Enlighten me, and if you have a formula dispenser you like, please recommend :)

Re: Formula dispensers

  • I would put the water in the bottles, then add the formula from the dispenser. That way, I didn't have to worry about finding water (or carrying that around as well as the bottles.)

Also, if you have an inch of formula at the bottom of a bottle, it's hard to judge how much water to use, since the markings will be thrown off, you know what i mean?

I liked your method better.  I always found it was easier to add water to the powder as opposed to the other way around.  After a while I learned how to compensate for the powder volume in the bottom of the bottle.  Early on, I would just have a spare cheap bottle that I would use to measure the water amounts to add to their bottles.  Not to mention, when I had the dispenser, I never used the formula frequently enough for it to really be good (it would get clumpy).

  • I've found that it is really hard to tell how much water to add if the formula is already in the bottle (and you don't have a measuring cup) unless you are filling the bottle to the top.  So, I pre-measure the water into the bottles before I leave, then add the formula (also pre-measured) while we're out.  This also means one less bottle to carry around, since I don't have to have a separate bottle of water with me.

This is exactly what we do for the same reasons.

  • I agree with pea-kay.

And if you get them, hang on to them.  They're great for cheerios and stuff on the go later on.

Same. It was easier for us because my kids were very sensitive to everything. They even had upset tummies from tap water in a different state.

I would measure the correct amount of water into each bottle for each kid for however long we were going to be gone, plus one extra for each (came in handy more than once to have a spare bottle handy). I had two different colored formula containers. The two different ones worked really well because it always seemed that the kids were taking different amounts in their bottles at each feeding. Plus they were on different formulas for a while and had to keep that in order.

This.  We still use ours with our 3 year old and put in different snacks in each compartment (i.e. cherrios, raisins, etc.)

  • Sorry for the post & run. Thanks for the tips - makes perfect sense :)

  • I'm also with pea-kay. Smile I don't want to have to worry about compensating for the formula in the bottom of the bottle, so water in the bottles + formula dispenser is easiest for me.
